TO: Board of Directors
FROM: Betsy Blume, Director of Fund Development
DATE: January 6, 2003
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of Directors approve the following policy:
When a chapter or a division creates a conference event or program that is intended to be of interest to large numbers of attendees outside the chapter or division; and when SLA headquarters agrees to partner with the chapter or division and provide benefits for the sponsorship that are unique to sponsorships at the national level; then the originating chapter or division must delegate full and final fund raising authority to the Director of Fund Development. SLA headquarters will not enter into such partnerships unless the event/program has the approval and support of the chapter or division leaders.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The addition of conference-wide parties to annual conference in Philadelphia, San Antonio and Los Angeles has been wonderful, and a tremendous boon to conference. However, it has become clear that a board-level policy is needed to help planners meet the challenges inherent in such a large collaborative effort. The above policy is intended to encourage chapters and divisions to continue their involvement in making these events possible, and to ensure that the relationships that headquarters has cultivated with SLA’s corporate sponsors stay strong.
FINANCIAL IMPACT STATEMENT: There is no cost of implementation for this policy.
