The School of Information Studies at Syracuse University has a part-time executive doctoral program for highly qualified middle level managers looking to boost their careers.

The Doctorate of Professional Studies in Information Management is a three-year program with fall, spring and summer terms, which is offered online, hybrid, and brief residency course formats. The 51-credit hour program involves 16 courses on methods, research and practice topics (36 credits total), plus 15 credits for thesis work.

“The program’s applied approach complements the research focus of the iSchool’s existing residential Ph.D. in information science and technology,” says Associate Dean for Research and Doctoral Studies Jeffrey Stanton. “The professional doctorate program also fits with Syracuse University’s commitment to life-long learning and meeting the evolving needs of students at various stages of their professional careers.

For current SLA members who apply to the program, Syracuse will waive the GRE admissions requirement for any applicant with at least five years of professional experience in corporate, governmental or academic libraries. To accomplish this the applicant must indicate his or her affiliation with SLA and professional experience in the application essay. Additionally, Syracuse has offered to accept up to 15 credits of prior doctoral-level work from any qualified U.S. doctoral program in library science or a related field: this can reduce the tuition by about 40% in the first and second year of study for a student who has already accomplished some part- or full-time doctoral work in another program.

While, at this time, Syracuse is not able to discount the tuition cost or a graduate credit hour in this distance-based Doctor of Professional Studies degree, the new distance program requires 30% fewer credit hours per year for professional librarians than the standard Ph.D. program. Please consult the Syracuse University site for more information about tuition and fees.

The next admission term for the DPS-IM program is Summer 2014.
