2001-2002 CHAPTER ANNUAL REPORT

Chapter: Arizona

The following questions refer to the activities of your chapter during the June 2001 to June 2002 Association year. When the response is in the affirmative and additional details and explanation are requested, briefly provide written information on a separate piece of paper and attach it to this report form. Reports must be submitted by May 1, 2002. Please send samples of any chapter brochures or other printed materials. Thank you.

A. ADMINISTRATION

1) Does your chapter offer any type of leadership training for officers and/or committee chairs beyond the training provided at Leadership Development Institute?
Yes. There is an informal mentoring done by the previous office holder.

2) Is your chapter having difficulty finding officers?
Yes. The one year term offices have been easy to fill, frequently with the same person serving as secretary or treasurer for multiple terms. President-elect is much more difficult to fill.

3) Does your chapter have a policy and procedures manual?
No.

4) Does your chapter have a strategic plan?
Yes. A copy of the most recent Strategic Plan is available at www.sla.org/chapter/caz/plan0103.html Date of last revision: August 2000.

5) Does your chapter conduct a membership needs survey?
Yes, 123 surveys were mailed to our membership on April 20, 2000. 51 survey responses were received - 42 % return rate. The complete survey may be found at www.sla.org/chapter/caz/memsurvey.html .

6) Does your chapter have any liaisons with any other information related groups?
Yes, we often partner for programs with local chapters of groups such as ALA, ASIS, SCIP, the law librarians and the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records.

7) Where are your archives housed?
We are currently looking for a place to house the archives. Is there a signed archives agreement? No.

B. FINANCE

1) Does your chapter have a fund raising campaign?
No. The chapter does not have a formal fund raising campaign. We did sell shirts embroidered with the AZ SLA logo and sold extra raffle tickets after giving each meeting attendee one free raffle ticket.

2) Do you support the travel expenses for your leaders at Winter Meeting and Annual Conference?
Yes: Winter Meeting, $300 for both President and President-elect; Annual Conference, $300 for both President and President-elect.

3) Does your chapter have an investment policy?
No.

4) Does your chapter have an expense reimbursement policy?
Yes. The original receipt and justification form must accompany reimbursement requests.

C. COMMUNICATIONS

1) Does your chapter produce any brochures? What is the target audience?

no Organizational decision makers/bosses
yes Prospective members
yes Sponsors/vendors/advertisers (fundraising)
yes General purpose



2) Does your Chapter publish a newsletter/bulletin?
Yes, both print & web based, published quarterly.

3) Does your Chapter publish a membership directory?
No.

4) Does your chapter exhibit at meetings of other library or non-library related groups?
No.

D. PROGRAMS

1) Please list all the programs and meetings your chapter has sponsored or co-sponsored:

  • August 2001 – Officers met to review progress on the AZ Chapter Strategic Plan
  • September 2001 - I Told You I'm Worth It, and I Can Prove It
  • October 2001 – Roberta Shaffer
  • May 2002 – Annual meeting (hoping to co-sponsor a meeting with Library Associates)
  • Plus monthly networking meetings to tour member libraries and network.

2) Using your best estimation, what percentage of your members attend meetings or programs?
20%-40%

Has this percentage increased or decreased from last year?
Experienced no change.

3) Does your chapter have any subunit, such as a section or networking group?
Yes:

  • Tucson Networking Group – organizes informal gatherings in southern AZ
  • Phoenix Networking Group – organizes informal gatherings in Phoenix area
  • Northern AZ Networking Group – organizes informal gatherings in northern AZ

E.MEMBERSHIP

1) Does your chapter offer any employment services?
Yes. The Employment Chair posts new job opportunities to the Chapter discussion group and maintains listings of job sources on our webpage. The Career Development Chair provides guidance to members seeking to change jobs or looking for a first library job plus reviews résumés, etc.

2) Does your chapter have a membership committee?
Yes. Typically it consists of one person, the Membership Chair.

3) Does your chapter have a membership recruitment plan?
No.

4) Does your chapter have a membership retention plan?
No.

5) Does your chapter follow-up on lapsed members?
Yes. The Membership Chair calls those people whose membership has lapsed.

6) Does your chapter have a new member reception or similar function?
No.

7) Does your chapter send "welcome packets" or similar information to new members?
Yes. The Membership Chair sends a chapter brochure and an SLA magnet to new members.

8) Are there any MLS or related programs in your chapter's area (Chapters only)?
Yes, The University of AZ School of Information Resources and Library Science located in Tucson, AZ.

9) Does your chapter have a program targeted toward increasing student membership/participation?
Yes. We have a Student Liaison who works with students. Also, the Tucson Networking chair involves students in the networking activities.

10) Does your chapter sponsor a student meeting?
No. We do not officially sponsor a student meeting this year, however, we encourage students to attend chapter meetings and offer them a reduced price.

11) Does your chapter have a mentoring program?
No. According to a member survey, there is not enough interest in a mentoring program at this time.

12) Does your chapter sponsor any scholarships or other sources of financial aid?
No.

13) Does your chapter sponsor a student(s)'s attendance at the annual conference?
No.

14) Does your chapter sponsor a "career night" or similar type program?
No.

15) Does your chapter have any awards/honors to bestow upon members?
Yes. We have the annual “Member of the Year” award and we periodically recognize members throughout the year at chapter meetings
