SLA Boston Northern Outreach Presents

Librarians Leveraging New Technologies for Knowledge Sharing and Access

Friday, July 21
9 a.m. to noon
Manchester Highlander Inn Conference Center
(at Manchester Airport)
2 Highlander Way
Manchester, NH 03103

PROGRAM OUTLINE

Special librarians have been at the forefront of technology adoption for decades; we were early adopters of perimeter notched cards, microform reading devices, photocopiers, microcomputers, and on-line search services to name a few. Information technologies of all types are probably the largest business sector in our current economy. The list of products that leverage hyperlinking is topped by, not only Internet search and intranet portal management, but also blogs, wikis, and navigation tools that bring controlled vocabularies to the end-user searcher.

We always face the challenge of positioning technology in the domain of special librarians, especially when it is a hot new area. So, this session will hear directly from librarians who embrace new technology challenges, and a consultant in the library services sector who will take us beyond what the technologies are and can do. They are going to share how they would position technology for specific knowledge sharing initiatives in the context of an organization’s business.
