Alex Caracuzzo, President of the RI Chapter, wrote that at the Leadership Summit in Tampa, SLA named Rhode Island and Boston Chapter member Anthony Stankus as recipient of the 2005 Rose L.Vormelker Award. This honor is bestowed upon “individual members in recognition of exceptional services to the profession of special librarianship in the area of mentoring students and/or practicing professionals in the field.” As a mentor and friend to students and colleagues alike, Tony has influenced the careers of scores of librarians over the years. Tony continues to be an influential force in the field of librarianship as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Rhode Island, as Science Librarian at Holy Cross, and as a prolific author. The award will be presented at the SLA Annual Conference in Toronto

Anne Esler joined the Dartmouth College’s Feldberg Library as a Reference Librarian starting in January, 2005. Anne was working as a Reference Librarian at Baruch College, which is part of the City University of New York. She also held appointments at the New York Institute of Technology and Dowling College, and worked previously at TIAA-CREF.  Anne holds an MBA from the University of Phoenix, an MLS from Wayne State University, and a BA from the University of Michigan.

Deborah Garson
, Head of Research and Instruction Services at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education’s Gutman Library, attended the SLA Leadership Summit in Tampa, Florida January 26-29, 2005. The program presented a lot of opportunities to network, to develop leadership and management skills, and to hear about the Association’s work and vision. Deborah is a candidate for Division Cabinet Chair-Elect in SLA’s 2005 election. Please remember to cast your ballot, as SLA is your Association.

Brandy King has been awarded the SLA Innovations in Technology Award for her work
at the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's Hospital Boston. She has worked with the SemanTx Life Sciences Company and the Unified Medical Language System to create customized media effects ontology for use in their online database at www.cmch.tv .The awards ceremony will take place at the SLA annual conference in Toronto in June, where she will be presenting a paper about her work. Brandy is the Librarian, at the Center on Media and Child Health, Children's Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health.

Michelle Knight is working at the Franklin Olin College of Engineering (http://www.olin.edu) as a program assistant. Her manager is the new director of Post Graduate Planning and Michelle is
helping her manager establish and run the office. Michelle wears many different hats, including managing contact information, supervising students, ordering materials for a new career library, and coordinating website feature development. She is also running a public speaking workshop for students on the side. It keeps her very busy and energized.

Claudette Newhall left her position as InfoCenter Collections/Systems Manager at Fidelity Management & Research Co. in January. She has replaced Pam Burch as Associate Librarian at the Congregational Library. Sue Priver is leaving the Minuteman Library Network (MLN) Central Site where she has been working as the Assistant User Services Librarian position since June 2000 and she now will be the new Member Services Librarian at the Fenway Libraries Online (FLO) Central Site, starting Feb 24th. She writes that she is “sad to be leaving Minuteman after being here for 4 1/2 years and excited about starting a new position in a different organization.”

March 1 is the deadline for registering for the Simmons College GSLIS Alumni/ae and Professional Day to be held April 1, 2005 at Simmons. The theme this year is “Nobody’s Fool:  Library Business, Boom or Bust.”  Speakers this year include Susan Curzon, of the California State University at Northridge, Maureen Sullivan of Maureen Sullivan Associates, and Alumni Achievement Award winner, Ann Wolpert, Director of the MIT Libraries.  The link to the online registration information form and information about the April 2nd continuing education courses may be found at http://www.alumnet.simmons.edu/.  The meeting and classes are open to all.

Hope Tillman, our own chapter president, was also awarded an honor at the Leadership Summit in Tampa. She was named an SLA Fellow and will also be presented with the award in June. 

David Ware is the new Access Services Librarian at the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, where he'll be working with fellow SLA folks like Dee Magnoni and Stephanie White. Formerly at the Harvard Design Library, Dave received his MLIS from Simmons College in August '04.

In September 2004 Elizabeth Winiarz traveled to Hobart, Tasmania to attend the Annual Conference of IAMSLIC, the International Association of Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers. Liz serves as secretary of the association.
