Update with SLA@S, Simmons Student SLA Group
by Emilie Codega, SLA@S President at codega@simmons.edu

SLA@Simmons (SLA@S) recently completed a successful and active school year. Simmons students have continued to be involved in SLA activities, thanks in part to the help and support of many SLA Boston Chapter members.

In November, we invited Tom Clark (Sun Microsystems), Deborah Volpe, (PricewaterhouseCoopers, formerly of Teradyne), Jillian Amaral (Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research), and Julie Whelan (Mass General Hospital) to participate in an Advanced Sciences Panel on campus. These extremely interesting librarians spoke with Simmons students about their experiences as special librarians in the sciences.

Our March panel, “Beyond Corporate Librarianship” featured special librarians Deborah Barlow Smedstad (Museum of Fine Arts), Alan Thibeault (Boston Herald), Stephanie White (Olin College of Engineering), and recent Simmons graduate Jeff Mehigan (Museum of Science). This varied group discussed special library roles outside of the corporate setting. A lively question-and-answer period ensued.

A number of students made the drive to Burlington one night in early April for a fascinating tour of the Sun Microsystems campus and library. Tom Clark introduced us to fellow Sun librarians Cindy Hill (via conference call from California) and Scott Brown (via video conference from Colorado), giving us a taste of the national scope of his working day.

More than sixty Simmons students took part in the “Day on the Job” program, to great success. A special thanks to Mary Condon and Kris Liberman for laboring over the matches. We at Simmons truly appreciate the time and effort it takes to organize and plan this annual event. The opportunity to meet with special librarians in their places of work is invaluable to Simmons librarians-in-training.

Again, SLA@S would like to especially thank the following SLA Boston Chapter members for their support this year: Ann Cullen, James Matarazzo, Mary Condon, Kris Liberman, Tom Clark, Stephanie White, Jillian Amaral, Deborah Volpe, Jeff Mehigan, Alan Thibeault and Hope Tillman, as well as all of the members who hosted Simmons students for “Day on the Job.”  SLA@S members look forward to seeing many of you in Toronto this June and working with the Boston Chapter back home in 2005-2006.
