Meet the Special Library
The Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) Library
by Deanna Briggs, dbriggs@copyright.com

For this bulletin’s “Meet the Special Library” I didn’t need to look any further than my own back yard. Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) has begun the process for organizing its resources and services into a library. This effort began in late 2006 and is spearheaded by Dave Davis, CCC’s Manager of Competitive Intelligence (MSLIS, CUA, ’82). “I led the founding of a corporate library for a technology company in the late 1980’s; but today’s digital and web-services enabled landscape has changed everything. The power of electronic resources – deployed under licenses – is greater than ever before.” The library will serve to advance CCC’s strategic objectives and function as a rich internal resource for CCC’s more than 200 employees.

Thus far the CCC library exists in both physical and electronic formats. The physical library is a small “reading room” with print serials and books. However, these are not yet cataloged. One of many goals for the coming year is to create a searchable catalog for the all of the company’s information resources. The electronic collection is already accessible. Dave surveyed across CCC departments to determine what for-fee subscriptions exist at CCC, both electronic and in print format. He posted a listing of these subscriptions on the wiki, in the form of a table that contains the name of the subscription, a basic description of the resource, and the name of the go-to person to see concerning access. Putting up this wiki has served as a starting point, to increase awareness of the information resources CCC already has.

The A-to-Z list on the wiki also serves two other purposes. First, the list has been useful in the development of a centralized content budget for resources in the next fiscal year. Second, the list has been used to help CCC become a user of Rightsphere, the company’s rights advisory tool
(see http://www.copyright.com/ccc/do/viewPage?pageCode=bu11 for more info) launched last year and now used by Novartis, AstraZeneca, Boeing, and Eli Lilly, among other companies. Dave has stepped up to the role as CCC’s “Rightsphere Administrator Librarian.” The A-to-Z list is thus a foundation for CCC’s local holdings and will used to set up the license management and rights advisory services implemented through Rightsphere.

Dave also publishes a wiki page to CCC’s intranet that contains links to industry and market news of relevance to employees. It’s called the “CCCIntell Web.” The headlines indicated on this page, permissioned through CCC’s licenses and direct agreements with publishers, are for stories that are closely related to CCC’s businesses, markets and customers. An alternative source of news headlines of interest to CCC is provided via RSS feeds, which are updated daily and pruned weekly.

Looking to the immediate future, it will be a very busy “Year One” for the CCC library. The library project plan includes an aggressive roadmap with target dates for all activities listed. These tasks include creating a library services and marketing plan and holding a formal library kickoff event. In the next fiscal year, the library will also have its own budget, services, and staff for the first time in the history of the company.

To internally market the library and its services within CCC, book announcements about “new arrivals” are posted to a Library Portal on the company intranet. Announcements include the bibliographic information about new books and other publications recently acquired. Employees may sign up for any item via each item’s routing list. The first announcement of new arrivals was made in January! The journey has begun!
