Tour of the Masonic Memorial

DC/SLA members and guests are invited to join the Military Librarians’ Group of DC/SLA for a tour of the Masonic Memorial in Old Towne Alexandria. Dedicated to George Washington, the memorial was built by the American Freemasons to honor the most prominant member of this fraternity.

The Freemasons believe that strong societies are developed by strengthening moral character among members. They are also devoted supporters of democracy and freedom. They trace their roots to the stone mason guilds of 16th century. Over the next two centuries, other craft guilds were incoroporated and the organization was transformed into a fraternity.
