Joint Spring Workshop 2004 - The USA Patriot Act: What It Means for Your Library, What It Means for You

WHAT:  The USA PATRIOT Act has been a controversial piece of legislation ever since its enactment in the weeks following September 11, 2001. Supporters hail it as a necessary tool to fight terrorism and prevent future attacks. Opponents questions its provisions for expanded police powers and raise concerns about privacy issues. Library and library records are specifically mentioned in the Act making it a law that is of particular importance to the information profession. The program’s speakers will give an overview of the Act, discuss its policy implications for libraries and look ahead to future amending legislation.

Speakers include Representative Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Professor David Cole (Georgetown University Law Center), Mr. Chuck Rosenberg (Chief of Staff, Office of the Deputy Attorney General), and Ms. Lara Flint (Staff Counsel, Center for Democracy and Technology).
