SLA Career Development Virtual Seminar

WHAT:  SLA Career Development Virtual Seminar - Evaluating Your Strengths and Identifying Areas for Further Learning.  The speaker will be Barbara M. Robinson, the principal of Robinson & Associates, a management consulting firm specializing in strategic planning and organization redesign. She works with both individuals, and teams and offers a variety of services, including coaching, executive search, transition and succession planning, as well as meeting facilitation.

Using the SLA personal competencies as a point of departure, this seminar delves into the concepts of “strengths,” “needs,” “needs under stress,” and “interests” of information professionals (IPs). The focus is on IPs who manage others as well as those IPs who work in teams and have direct responsibility for doing the substantive work.

The challenge for managers is to develop and grow their staff to achieve a fit with their parent organization. For the individual staff members, the challenge is to be productive and fulfilled in their jobs. Learn how to take stock of your strengths, needs, and interests, and those of your staff and to consider how the strengths, needs, and corporate culture of both the special library and/or the parent organization match up with your own profile.

The seminar draws on tools and concepts from management consulting, organization development, and industrial psychology. Examples come from special library environments and other relevant organizational settings.
