Examination Information

The examination will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's responses on the official employment application form that includes a questionnaire regarding the applicant's training and experience. Your responses will be scored. You will be notified of your results by mail and/or email.

The exam content as described above may be modified depending upon the number of applicants or other factors that influence the practicality or usefulness of this selection process. Where minor differences in actual test scores do not reflect meaningful differences in ability, those scores will be statistically grouped resulting in a tie among those applicants.

Purpose of Examination

The purpose of this examination is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present or possible future vacancies in this classification. For each vacancy, a Department Director/Division Manager has the choice of the top five ranking persons, inclusive of tie scores, on the eligible list. Test scores and rank are only used for the purpose of placing applicants on eligible lists. Final hiring decisions are not based on actual numerical test scores or rank. This list will remain in effect for six months, unless exhausted, superseded by a new eligible list or extended for another six months by the Personnel Committee.

This is a continuous examination, and applications will be accepted until such time as there are sufficient applicants to meet the County's current recruitment needs. Job Description

Wayne State University Library System seeks a highly motivated, innovative, energetic, proactive library professional to serve as Information Services Librarian I/II/III with a focus on first-year student programs and expertise to serve students and faculty in the sciences and engineering.  Information Services provides excellent instruction, training, consultation, research support, and reference services to further student success, faculty innovation, research, teaching, and lifelong learning; this service group is composed of the following three teams: Reference, Research Support and Instruction.

Essential Functions : Reporting to the Coordinator of Information Services, the incumbent will:  Plan, develop, and deliver innovative library services that support research and inquiry for faculty and students in the sciences and engineering with a focus on first-year students; serve as library liaison to one or more academic departments in the sciences and engineering with responsibility for collection development and instruction; serve as library liaison to the university's First Year Experience program, learning communities, student orientation, iStart, and other initiatives for first year students; serve as a member of the libraries' Instruction Team; participate in an instruction program that focuses on building students' information literacy and research skills ; provide user-focused reference service in the sciences and engineering, including general and virtual reference for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff, as well as other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school; strong commitment to teaching and public service; ability to communicate and interact effectively with faculty, staff and students in a culturally diverse and rapidly changing environment; knowledge and familiarity with MS Windows and Office Suite and desktop/office applications; experience using electronic information systems; practical Internet experience, including familiarity with Web search engines; and skills in analyzing, organizing and presenting information; ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks; excellent oral and written communication skills and teaching or presentation skills; ability to thrive in a changing environment; ability to work independently or as a team member and to communicate effectively with non-technical staff, vendors and other campus technology staff; familiarity with current trends in library technology and electronic resources along with the ability to apply this knowledge to a local situation.

Preferred Qualifications : Academic library experience; experience with the scientific and engineering literature or an undergraduate or advanced degree in the sciences, engineering, or a related field; library instruction experience; skill in using technologies to enhance instruction; experience in providing reference services, user education, information literacy, database searching, and in developing print and online instructional materials and tutorials; familiarity with current trends and issues in library instruction and first-year programs; experience with Blackboard or other course management system; established record or potential for a record of professional achievement and scholarship.

Digital Collections Project Manager

The Henry Ford-America's Greatest History Attraction (www.thehenryford.org ), has an opening for a Digital Collections Project Manager.  Housing one of the largest collections of its kind ever assembled, The Henry Ford showcases the people and ideas that have fired our imaginations and changed our lives.  The unparalleled collection of nearly one-million items includes tens of thousands of ordinary objects, items associated with illustrious Americans and inventions documenting technological advances.  The Henry Ford offers a rich and diverse offering of exhibits, demonstrations, programs and reenactments.

This position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the development of web-based digital access to the transportation collections. The Digital Collections Project Manager will work with a variety of teams to develop and implement a plan to select transportation-related objects for an online database, coordinate content development, develop and implement policies, procedures and standards, and evaluate usability and user satisfaction.  This is a grant-funded position that ends 12/31/09 with possibility of extension.

Job Requirements

Requires ALA accredited Master's degree in Library or Information Sciences or equivalent; at least two years' relevant professional experience preferred.  Knowledge and experience with current metadata and descriptive standards including XML, MARC, METS/MODS, CCO, OAI, and authority control.

Qualified candidates possess:  the ability to plan, coordinate, and implement projects in a shared decision making environment; excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; experience with digital initiatives; demonstrated knowledge of strategic planning and current technologies, standards, and best practices, including metadata practices and associated technologies; working knowledge of image capture and delivery technologies and database management systems; competency in database design, and data modeling; familiarity with copyright and intellectual property issues; and good organizational skills and an aptitude for complex analytical and detailed work.
