One of the issues I found extremely interesting was the report of the Branding Task Force. As you may know the Branding Task Force was initiated by President Susan DiMattia in January 2000. The initial responsibility of this task force was to retain a consulting firm to objectively assess our brand identity. The firm chosen, Source, Inc did not deliver a satisfactory product. A second firm, Creative Project Management, was retained for this project. Name and tagline ideas were developed and membership input was solicited. At a town hall meeting at the annual conference last June logos, names and taglines were presented and the task force decided to concentrate on only the name change. In September ‘02 the task force was ready to poll the membership on a list of possible names. Over 2000 responses were received. The Task Force presented two alternatives to the Board for consideration. In their Board document the Task Force stated, “the name ‘Special Libraries Association, Inc’ cannot be ‘fixed’ without excessive and pointless effort. It does not meet our basic standard of representing our members’ best interests for our internal and external communications, image and identity.” The Task Force went on to recommend that the Board present to the membership at the Annual Business Meeting in June 2003 a measure to approve a full SLA membership vote, by mail ballot, which will result in a change to the bylaws and the choice of a new name for the Association. The names recommended by the Task Force are SLA (simple acronym) and Information Professionals International (IPI). This is bound to be a lively topic at the winter meeting and the subject of many articles and discussion lists leading up to the June meeting and after.
Other Board discussion included whether to sell the headquarters building, the executive director search, and the acceptance of the vote by the membership of the bylaws revision. Overall it was an interesting meeting and I went away assured that a very able Board represents us that cares greatly for the welfare of our organization.
To the local scene, I want to make sure you are aware of the upcoming satellite teleconference on December 11, 2002 on “Safeguarding our patrons’ privacy: What every librarian needs to know about the USA Patriot Act & related anti-terrorism measures.” The State Library is hosting this and the Albuquerque site will be at Sandy Spurlock’s conference room at the Lovelace facility. Sarah Morley, chapter vice-president and program chair has other programs scheduled including our holiday open house. I look forward to seeing you at some of these events.

Kick off for the Rio Grande Chapter year was held at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe on Thursday October 3, 2002. We had 14 people joining us for lunch at the museum café before we begin our 1:15 p.m. tour of the research library and the museum. The research library is only open to the public twice a year so we were very fortunate to be allowed to tour the facility. Fascinating to see the chalks and paints in order by color - wonder if Ms. O'Keeffe was a librarian in a previous life!

This teleconference will provide libraries and their governing institutions with an analysis of the implications of the recent anti-terrorism measures. This will include identifying steps that institutions need to take to comply with proper search warrants, subpoenas, and wiretap requests from law enforcement. Panelists Tracy Mitrano, Policy Advisor, Director of Computer Law and Policy, Office of the Vice President for Information Technology, Cornell University; James Neal, Vice President and University Librarian, Columbia University Libraries; Gary Strong, Director, Queens Borough Public Library; Thomas M. Susman, Partner, Ropes & Gray, Washington, D.C. will address the key legal issues and policy implications for libraries and address the impact of any legislative and regulatory proposals on the privacy and First Amendment rights of library users.
This teleconference is an exciting opportunity to reach out to librarians, legal counsels, library administrators/executives, library governing board members, information technologists, and state networks/consortia staff with answers to questions about the PATRIOT Act, the revised FBI Guidelines, and other Homeland Security measures.

During the mid-1990s a researcher on the staff of The Lovelace Institutes (now known as Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute or LRRI) named Dr. Larry Berger used a grant to build a special collection of books about health beliefs and practices of Native Americans in North America. Two librarians from the TLI Medical Library, Medical Librarian Sarah Morley and Janet Williams, cataloged the books and organized them for loan.
For several years the collection was located at the Inhalation Toxicology Research Institute Research Library n Kirtland Air Force Base, where it was difficult to access by members of the public. With LRRI's move to its new Research Building adjacent to Lovelace Hospital on Gibson, the Native American Health Collection is once again more accessible. Sandy Spurlock, Library Manager for the LRRI Library, would like to encourage the use of this unique collection.
The collection comprises about 300 books, with topics ranging from Native American history and traditions to spiritual practices and medicinal herbs. The collection is somewhat dated since the last acquisitions arrived in 1997. LRRI encourages the use of this collection, which is located at 2425 Ridgecrest Drive, SE (closest cross streets are Gibson & San Pedro SE, behind the Veterans Administration Hospital.) Books are not available for loan to unaffiliated individuals, but loans will be made to other libraries who borrow on behalf of their clients.
