The agenda for the Winter SLA meeting was packed with some very significant issues and proposed changes that are facing our association. Being on the Finance committee I was familiar with some of the issues, but by no means did I understand and fully appreciate all the issues. Board of Directors member Margie Hlava suggested that it might be useful to get together prior to the meeting to discuss the issues and see if there was consensus among our members. We did something similar last year regarding the bylaws.
All chapter members were invited to join in for this discussion. Eight of us were able to get together. The different perspectives were interesting and allowed me to see the issues from various angles. We discussed branding, the name change, the sale of the building, the accounting of funds donated by vendors to chapters as well as a few others. Of course, in our usual way, we also had a chance to catch up with each other socially. It was a wonderful session that provided a few insights and some agreement. Margie felt that a discussion with the members of our chapter would help her in representing the broader constituency from across the association. Margie sent a message to the other Board members about this meeting and President of SLA, Bill Fisher said he thought this activity was useful, just the thing he would expect from the Rio Grande Chapter and suggested that others try this in the future.
I was unable to attend the winter meeting, but the Rio Grande Chapter was well represented by Sarah Morley and Judy Neff. Sarah remarked that she and Judy were so much better informed that most of the other officers in attendance due to our pleasant few hours spent examining the issues prior to the meeting.
We have some wonderful leaders on the Board of Directors (including our own Rio Grande chapter members Margie Hlava and Jesus Lau), people who are dedicated to the membership. They are volunteers who serve because they are committed to the Association. They become a very close-knit group. They communicate often with each other, but sometimes forget to talk to the very people they represent. Sometimes the sentiment from the members can be quite different from that of the Board. So I really appreciate Margie’s efforts to inform us and listen. I believe our chapter members helped her to better represent the entire membership.
In addition, our small chapter size is actually somewhat of an advantage. We know each other, we perhaps rely more on each other and we take the time to talk and listen to each other. I am proud to be the President of the Rio Grande Chapter and even prouder to say I am a member of such an interested and caring organization.
Gloria
In addition, Linda submitted the winning theme for this year’s International Special Libraries Day – “Orchestrating a World of Information”. According to the SLA press release “Her creative moniker exemplifies the charge of information professionals as they direct and manage a changing world of information for the benefit of their clients.” Linda asked that the $200 cash award be turned over to the Rio Grande Chapter.
BTW, this is the second time in the past few years the Rio Grande Chapter has submitted a winning theme to SLA. We’ve obviously got more than our share of creative folks!!
Dell Johnson
Dell Johnson recently joined the reference staff of the Technical Library at Sandia National Labs. Dell relocated to
Albuquerque from Austin Texas. She is a graduate of the library school at the University of Texas and has
library experience in technical libraries at IBM, SEMATECH and Brown & Root. Dell was very active in the Texas
Chapter of SLA and was the chapter president in 2000-01. Among other interests, Dell enjoys painting and works
mostly in watercolors.
Julie Kesti
Julie Kesti has been selected as the new manager for Sandia's Technical Library Operations Department.
Julie has a Masters of Library Science from UCLA and has been in the Sandia Technical Library since joining
the Labs eleven years ago. She began her career in reference and most recently has been responsible for the
library's Imaging Center of Excellence.
Sally Landenberger
Sally Landenberger, who has been with the Sandia National Laboratories Technical Library for 20 years, will be retire
effective March 6, 2003. Sally began her Sandia career after working for more than 15 years in the academic Library
environment at Wayne State University, Detroit, MI and Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI. Her specialty was
technical services operations. Her contributions as manager of Sandia's Technical Library Operations Department include:
functional realignment of the Technical Services area; standardization of cataloging to meet national standards;
digitization of Sandia technical reports; and a leader of the Library's Digital initiative and development. During her
tenure, Sally expanded the number of professional staff in her Department to meet the growing need for experts in
information organization and retrieval for Sandia's knowledge management initiatives.
Sally is also a founding member of the Alliance for Innovation in Science and Technology Information, a multi-type Library consortium, established in 1992, to enhance access to scientific and technical information. Sally served as Chairperson of the Alliance for two terms.
Heather O’Daniel
Deliberative Forum Content Development Project
The 2003 Libraries and Community ALA pre-conference noted that the most helpful information they could have on
deliberative forums would be case study descriptions of libraries that have begun implementing them in their
communities. So, a Master's class in Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois will be filling
that need.
Heather O'Daniel, a student in that class, will be covering the LBJ Library Forum. She has been afforded the opportunity to interview the current Director of the LBJ Library, Dr. Sue Flowers. The final study will be published at the ALA web site.
Nancy Orlando
SLA-Rio Grande Chapter member Nancy Orlando recently completed a six-week consultancy at the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA), in Vienna, Austria. The IAEA is an independent intergovernmental, science and technology-based
organization, in the United Nations family, that serves as the global focal point for nuclear cooperation.
The project, at the request of the Safeguards Information Technology Division (SGIT) of IAEA, was a pilot to identify processes for the conversion of an open source document collection from paper to electronic. The collection in conjunction with other IAEA generated information, is used in the process to verify that signatories of the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement show no evidence of diversion of nuclear material or undeclared nuclear material or activities. Fellow chapter-member, Joyce van Berkel, who previously completed a three-year assignment at the IAEA, served as project coordinator.
Amanda Zeigler
Amanda also recently joined the Sandia National Labs Technical Library as a graduate student intern.
She is enrolled in the Texas Woman's University MLS program, taking classes through the distance-learning program.
Amanda has responsibilities in acquisitions, serials, and electronic resources.
Gloria Zamora
Gloria is a candidate for Treasurer of the Special Libraries Association. Congratulations and good luck, Gloria!
Hello everyone. Sorry I haven't made a report for a while--being on sabbatical makes it hard to do the usual things. :-) Anyway, I think the news is fairly good for the Chapter. We have 71 members now, so we are back up to where we were a year ago. Congratulations to Judy Neff at Sandia, since I think she may be responsible for many of our new members. I have seven new members to report: Sharon Finarelli, of Book Systems Inc in T or C, Michele Wood of ENMU Golden Library in Portales, and five from Sandia National Laboratories: Amanda Zeigler, Susan Flores, Linda Konkel, Katherine Nienow, and Sally Landenberger (but now retired!). [PS – and Dell Johnson – ed.]

The Rio Grande Chapter will host the 2004 Winter Meeting in Albuquerque next January. Heather Hlava, Chair of the Local Arrangements Committee, is looking for at least one or two more members to join Margie Hlava, Sarah Morley, Judy Neff, Sandy Spurlock, Gloria Zamora, and Carmen Ward on the committee. Chapter responsibility for the meeting includes the Welcome Reception, Hosts for Dinner Buddies (first night), and the registration table. This is unlike hosting most conferences, as SLA Headquarters is responsible for everything else. We get the fun part (Hospitality) so please consider helping out. Contact Heather (hlavaheather@yahoo.com) or Sarah (smorley@salud.unm.edu) for more information or to sign on as a committee member. The committee will meet mid-March when Heather returns from Australia.

The "Small But Mighty" Rio Grande Chapter is the local host for the Special Libraries Association Winter 2004 meeting, and we have a lot to do! The dates are January 22 - 24, 2004 - please mark your calendars.
The meeting will be held at the Hyatt in downtown Albuquerque.
The local host chapter is responsible for several activities:
Heather Kotula is chair of the local arrangements committee. Margie Hlava and Sandy Spurlock are members of the committee. They have begun researching reception sites and caterers for the Thursday night Welcome Reception. No matter which location we choose, it will be a wonderful "Fiesta on the Rio Grande!"
At the Winter 2003 meeting in New Orleans (January 22-24, 2003), they also distributed nearly 100 Albuquerque Visitor guides from the Convention and Visitor's Bureau and lots of other visitor information to the attendees.
We know that this will be the best Winter meeting SLA has ever had! In order to make it happen, though, we need everyone's participation. If you would like to be a member of the committee, please contact Heather as soon as possible. However, even if your contribution will be staffing an information or registration desk for a couple of hours, everything helps.
Please contact Heather Kotula (a.k.a. Heather Hlava) at 828-9577 or hlavaheather@yahoo.com and let her know how you want to help.

Dear Friends, I hope that this finds you in good health and spirits. I have had the honor and privilege of serving as your State Librarian for the past four and a half years. I have submitted my letter of resignation to be effective May 20th. I have accepted the Director of the University Library position at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. The search for a new State Librarian has begun. …This is not a farewell note because there is a lot of work to be done in the next three and a half months and I hope to get out and about the state after the legislative session is over.
Thank you for allowing me to serve you.
Take care. Ben
The Winter Meeting is unlike any other SLA meeting. No vendors, no exhibits – just a lot of work. This meeting is the time for Chapter and Division Officers to get together to work on Association business. The Board of Directors and specific committees (e.g. Nominating, Conference Program) convene several times over a four-day period. The leadership group, composed of Chapter and Division Officers, pack everything they can into two days. Beginning at 8:00 and ending at 5:00 or 6:00 (however long it takes!), about 200 leaders meet to discuss issues confronting the Association.
This year in New Orleans we heard presentations from the Branding Task Force, the Finance Committee, and Member Services. At various times during the two days we broke into groups to discuss the branding effort, mission/vision statements, and membership recruitment and retention. There were also opportunities for roundtable discussions covering topics from small/large chapter or division programming to mentoring to finance to job hunting. Facilitated by Board members and other association leaders, these discussions were a good way to connect with members from other chapters or divisions. I encourage you all to look at the following site for more information. http://www.sla.org/content/leadership/resource/ldi/LeadershipSummit2003.cfm - Leadership Summit Update
Lunches were also working meetings. The slate of candidates for SLA offices gave brief presentations the first day. The following day lunch included the SLA virtual seminar on Metadata and Taxonomies – presented by Jay Ven Emen of Access Innovations. (Jay had to rub it in that the weather in Albuquerque was gorgeous while those of us in New Orleans had to endure below 30-degree weather and freezing pipes!)
At the end of the two days, there were Chapter and Division Council meetings followed by a Joint Cabinet Meeting. I won’t say we didn’t have fun. The Louisiana Chapter hosted a very fine reception Thursday evening and showed us some exceptional southern hospitality. The Winter Meeting is your Association at work and we will all have a chance to see it in action next year when the Rio Grande Chapter hosts the 2004 Winter Meeting.
Winter Meeting 2003
by Judy Neff
The Rio Grande Chapter was well represented at the SLA Winter Meeting in New Orleans.
Recruitment and retention of members was a common problem at Chapter, Division, and Headquarters levels. Few solutions were offered except for inviting potential members to meetings and personally calling members who had let their memberships lapse. Margie Hlava had briefed Chapter members about Board issues so well, that in some cases, we were more aware of the proposals than some of the meeting leaders! Thanks, Margie!
The sale of the HQ building in DC promises to be a lively discussion and an emotional one for some members. Changing the fiscal year to a calendar cycle is under consideration. Chapters can submit questions and concerns to any Board member. No action is on the immediate horizon, just SLA wanting input.
A name change will be put to a vote at the June meeting in New York, once the Board has heard the results of the Leadership Summit roundtables and suggestions. Be sure to voice your opinion to Chapter leaders that will attend the annual conference. The vote will be by a 2/3 majority of those present at the meeting.
The candidates’ speeches were impressive. Information Outlook provides some more details of each candidate’s vision for SLA. A reception was held in a historical Creole house, Madam John’s Legacy. Artwork, artifacts, and sculpture could be viewed as one sampled Creole delicacies and desserts.
At several of the meetings, an invitation was extended to attend the 2004 Winter Meeting in Albuquerque. Heather Hlava is the Local Arrangements Chair and would be delighted to have help with all aspects of planning the reception for the meeting the Rio Grande Chapter will be hosting. Heather can be contacted at 828-9577 or hlavaheather@yahoo.com
