T H E M E 2001, An Information Odyssey: Seizing the Competitive Advantage As we journey into an ever-expanding world of technology, we find ourselves enmeshed in a professional evolution. Our odyssey begins in an environment of change, conflict and competition. Technological expansion is escalating at a dizzying pace. Our clients are able to grasp great quantities of data, but it is a blind journey down an information river. It is our expertise and burgeoning knowledge that will make the information odyssey constructive and profitable. As information professionals, we must embrace the changes in our environment, molding the stream of raw data into valuable packages of knowledge. To stay ahead of the curve, we must take on every opportunity to learn, to share and to grow. Competition is a key focus for information professionals in the year 2001. Not only must we keep our companies competitive, but we are often faced with juxtaposing forces trying to eliminate or diminish us. We must demonstrate that we are the keys in the doorway to success. As important team members, we must discover our place within our companies, letting go of traditional limitations and seizing opportunities to expand our horizons. Information professionals are now intricate parts of marketing departments, research centers, and information technology development. We are breaking our own glass ceilings by moving into critical management positions. In this time of Flux, we have endless opportunities for professional growth. The theme of this conference recognizes the changing environment in our field. It encourages each of us to journey on our own odyssey of professional growth during a time of professional evolution. With the right attitude, initiative, and education, we have a chance to propel our profession into the 21st century.
