"Everything We Do is Marketing"

Laura Claggett

We can have the most wonderful product, but if people have to exert too much energy to get it, we won't have many takers. Even if it's free, if we don't have what our customers want or need, people won't take it.

This class will revisit the four Ps of marketing - product, placement, price,
promotion; and talk about how everything from the books on our shelves, to
ourselves (we're part of the product!), makes up our marketing message.

We'll also talk about our favorite stores, and point out the subliminal
marketing they do that brings us back to their store and not the competition's. What brings, or doesn't bring, your customers back?

In her 21-year professional library career, Laura Claggett has worked for only three organizations - all in the Chicago area and all in special libraries.
About half of her career has been in management.

Laura is currently the library manager at UOP LLC, a petrochemical technology company headquartered in DesPlaines, IL (1 ½ years). She worked as an information researcher and library manager at Helene Curtis/Unilever, a personal care company (for almost 18 years), and started at the American Medical Association Library, as a research associate (1 ½ years.)

Laura was on the board of Special Libraries Association Illinois Chapter for five years, and served as its President in 2000/2001. She has served on the executive boards of the Chicago Library System and the North Suburban Library System, and is the chair of the Conference Board's Information Services Advisory Council. She also is an adjunct faculty at Dominican University's GSLIS and taught the 2003 spring semester Special Libraries class. Laura has an MLS from the University of Illinois and an MBA from Dominican University.
