Speaker I: Mary Ellen Bates: "Information Overload: Taming the Digital
Tiger"
The web has been both a blessing and a curse for information professionals.
We can find information that used to require hours of research, but we
also can get inundated with data, data and more data. Mary Ellen's presentation
covers ways we can combat information overload, both for ourselves and
for our patrons or clients, and how we can move up the value chain by
functioning as information filters and information analysts as well as
information searchers.
Mary Ellen Bates is the owner of Bates Information Services (www.BatesInfo.com),
providing business research to business professionals and special librarians,
and consulting services to the information industry. She is a frequent
international speaker and the author of six books, most recently Building
and Running a Successful Research Business (Information Today, 2003).
She received her MLS from the University of California, Berkeley, and
has been an online searcher since the 1970s.
