Welcome: Gloria Zamora, chair,
1998 Indianapolis Conference Program Committee
Introductory Remarks: Judith J. Field, President, SLA
Keynote Address: Stanley Davis
As companies race toward the year 2000, technological change
comes so fast that businesses must adopt lifelong learning processes to
keep up. Stan Davis, noted author and business consultant, shows you
how to increase your business' value by making it knowledge-based, no
matter what business you are in.
With a doctorate in the social sciences, Davis spent twenty years
on the faculty of the Harvard Business School, and Columbia and
Boston universities. Currently active in research, writing, consulting and public speaking, he is working on
a number of projects that represent a major new approach to
education.
A consultant to many corporations such as AT&T, Chase
Manhattan Bank, and Sun Microsystems, Davis' creative
business thinking led Federal Express to present him with their
"1992 Visionary of the Year Award" and
Fortune named his 2020 Vision the best management book of 1991.

Biomaterials
Biomaterials include substances such as synthetic
polymers, metals, and ceramics that are used in medical devices for
long-term implantation (artificial heart valves, dental fillings, hip prothesis)
or temporary use (wound dressings, sutures, IV catheters). The field
is rapidly growing and involves basic and applied research
across several established disciplines. As a result, its literature is
highly diffuse and often difficult to access. This program will give
a general overview of Biomaterials Science. It will then discuss
the major challenges facing those who wish to retrieve
information about biomaterials and offer guidance for more effective searching.

Automobile Design and Implications for Insurance Costs, Safety,
Repairability and Customer Service.
Consumers expect quality, safety, service and competitive pricing when
making their vehicle purchase decision. The cost to insure a vehicle is an
important consideration in the vehicle purchase. Vehicle safety features, like
ABS, daytime running lights, airbags, and handling features vary in the extent
to which insurance costs are affected. The corporate library provides a means
to keep abreast of the status of regulations affecting vehicle safety. The
effect of vehicle safety features on insurance costs will be presented. In
addition, the repairability and damage resistant features of several vehicles
will be presented to demonstrate the effect of good designs on minimizing
insurance costs to repair.
The automobile insurance industry is aggressively pursuing
implementation of programs that provide the highest level of customer service
related to collision repair. We can learn much about the kinds of customer
service initiatives that are expected to succeed in the automobile insurance
industry by researching what has worked well for other service industries. The
process of strategic planning will be discussed, incorporating the use of the
corporate library as an important resource.

Who Makes the Decision, & Then Who Makes It Work?
As information delivery mechanisms converge and change,
the traditional dividing line in place at many of our financial
institutions between "real time, market data" services and "research-based
and historical data" begins to disappear. When this happens,
who decides which services bankers, analysts and other financial
professionals will use, and who will administer their roll-out,
maintenance and support? Here is an opportunity for us to extend our range
and bring our "content" knowledge and information management
skills into higher focus. Our speaker will address this issue, and
also describe the ways in which she has been involved in
integrating internal and external data sources into a popular desktop product
for the financial professionals in her organization.

Proposal Writing For Results
Like all managers, special library managers need to know how
to write effective proposals to obtain resources and services.
Many times the proposals are internal company documents where
the library manager seeks to convince higher-ups of a certain course
of action; other situations may find the librarian responding to
grants or other external sources of funding. What perspective and
writing style should the proposal writer take to get positive results? How
can knowledge about the customer influence the proposal writing?
How can a librarian get involved in proposal writing and could this be
an alternative career path? These topics and others relating to
putting together effective proposals will be explored by a
professional trainer in proposal writing and a librarian who served as an
integral part of a proposal team.

will be LANs and WANs; their various components (bridges,
hubs, routers, switches, etc.) and network protocols. We need to be

The Effect of the Internet on Pharmaceutical Marketing
In a presentation entitled "Leveling the Playing Field: How Small
Pharmaceutical Companies Can Use the Internet to Communicate and Compete," Mr.
Coccia will describe how the rapidly evolving landscape of the Internet
provides a venue for smaller and niche-oriented pharmaceutical companies to
segment their audience, communicate with and educate patients and clinicians on
specific disease topics, and promote and sell their products cost effectively.
He writes: The greatest benefit for small or therapeutically-specific
pharmaceutical companies is that the Internet is the ultimate segmentation and
promotion vehicle. This talk will present a case study of how a small,
disease-specific company began using the Internet in its infancy and evolved
with the technology to achieve a Web site that presents highly targeted
material, with numerous reciprocal links. Additionally, the effective use of
search engines and diagnostic sites to have a site viewed and to measure who is
viewing will be explained.
