Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway & Museum Tour
The city of Indianapolis was a leader in the fledgling
automobile industry when the Speedway was built as a combination race
track and testing facility in 1909. The 500-mile Race was first held
in 1911 as it has been ever since with the exception of the war
years, 1917-1918 and 1942-45.
The original track owners, headed by Carl Fisher and
James Allison, turned it over in 1927 to a group led by WWI ace
Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, who later sold it to Anton Hulman, Jr. of
Terre Haute, Indiana in 1945.
At the Hall of Fame Museum you will see one of the
world's largest, most varied collections of racing, classic, and antique
cars, along with more than 30 Indianapolis "500" winning cars.
The "Tony Hulman Theater" presents a 30 minute film depicting
the history of the race and race highlights. You will also have
the opportunity to stop at the Louis Chevrolet Memorial and the
gift shop. The highlight of the tour is a track tour where you will
lap around the course and hear facts on the racetrack and various races.

500 Hall of Fame, movie, and Track tour.

Historic Home Tour
On this tour, you will visit three historic homes in the
Indianapolis area. One home belonged to poet James Whitcomb Riley,
an Indiana native son. He is known for writing and publishing
1,044 poems mostly about children and Indiana. Built in 1872, his
homne is located in historic Lockerbie Square and is furnished with
many items that he treasured and are very valuable today. Fine
examples of Victoria furniture, silver and rare decorative items along with
his personal papers, and clothing are on view. Late Victorian
elegance is seen in the bathroom that features a copper lined bathtub made
of cherry wood and an ironstone commode with a cut glass handle
for the pull chain.
You will also visit the stately 1875 three-story Italian mansion
of America's 23rd president, President Benjamin Harrison. Here
you will view his original Victorian furnishings and possessions,
herb and rose gardens.
The third home is the lavishly restored 1864 Morris-Butler
house which recreates the rich ambiance of Victorian life in
Indianapolis at its most opulent, even down to the dinner forks. As you
walk through the home you will notice a definite hierarchy of rooms.
First floor rooms tend to have higher ceilings, the finest
woodwork and the best furniture. The second and third floor rooms
have progressively lower ceilings and simple mouldings.
Pharmaceuticals magnate and philanthropist, Eli Lilly, became
personally involved with preserving the Morris-butler House.
