SLA's Advisory Council helped the units stay in touch with the Board of Directors however as the number of both chapters and divisions increased, it became apparent that many of the concerns of the chapters were of interest primarily to the chapters, and the same was true for the divisions. In the mid-1970s, the Advisory Council gave way to a Chapter Cabinet and a Division Cabinet and this structure continues today. The cabinets, which consist of the presidents and president-elects of the chapters and the chairs and chair-elects of the divisions, meet separately twice a year and hold joint cabinet sessions as needed. The cabinet officers are elected from the membership at-large and with a recent change in the Association's bylaws now serve on the Board of Directors for three years.
