Petroleum and Energy Resources
Compiled by Marie Tilson and Marriott Smart.
This commemorative publication of approximately 200 leaves covers the history of the Petroleum Section of the Science and Technology Division (1933--1966), the Petroleum Division (1966-1976) and the Petroleum and Energy Resources Division (1967-1993). It is divided into six parts:
| I | Chairs, 1933-1993 |
| II | The First Twenty Years From an article in Special Libraries (February 1934) there is a description of the groups that became part of the Science and Technology Division. Thelma Hoffman (Chair 1940-1942) and Mignon Gill (Chair 1951-1952) contribute their histories of the first twenty years. |
| III | Remembrances Particularly remarkable in this section are histories and personal narratives from thirty eight of our past chairs. For example, the son of Joshua Smith (our second Chair 1935-1938) did not know that his father had been a librarian! Miriam Treffiesen Friend (Chair 1942-1946) describes her World War II and Manhattan Project days. Kate Ornsen Barcus (Chair 1952-1953), who was an accomplished translator and Mary Banker Certain (Chair 1954-1955) tell of the early connections with the American Petroleum Institute. |
| IV | Honors |
| V | How We See Ourselves This section incorporates division committee reports and publications as well as photographs. |
| VI | How Others See Us (March 1929 -- January 1993) Main sources include selected articles from company newsletters and other publications. The section begins with "A New Company Library" from The Sohian, March 1929. The final entry is a reprint of "Have You Hugged Your Librarian Lately?" from Pipeline Industry, January 1993. |
