Voices of SLA

The "Voices of SLA: an International Oral History" is an initiative of the Fellows of SLA in partnership with the SLA Centennial Commission.

According to the Oral History Association, "oral history is a method of gathering and preserving historical information through recorded interviews...."

The SLA file of oral histories is launched with an essay based on materials and thoughts provided by several past presidents of SLA. In addition, transcripts of four of several oral histories conducted in the 1990s by Doreen Cohen for the San Andreas Chapter have been posted as examples of the type of information we hope to gather from a wide range of SLA members and friends of SLA. The San Andreas interviews include SLA past-presidents Bill Fisher and Cindy Hill as well as prominent members Monica Ertel and Eugenie Prime.

A committee of volunteers from the Fellows has created a list of potential interviewees. An attempt will be made to include a diverse group, ranging from past elected leaders, award winners, mid- and early-career members, staff members, and supporters of SLA and its programs.

Interviews will be conducted during 2009, SLA's Centennial, and well into the future. Various training opportunities will be provided to anyone who wishes to volunteer as an interviewer.

To volunteer and/or to offer suggestions about the project, contact either Project Chair Susan DiMattia or Project Manager Jean Scanlan.
