Chapter and division Government Relations Chairs serve three vital functions in SLA's Public Policy Department. First, the Public Policy staff depends on the chairs to call attention to issues of concern in their geographic region or area of interest. Second, they assist in grassroots efforts when necessary. Third, they provide input on national and global issues.
As the Government Relations Chair for your chapter or division, you act as a focal point for government relations activities in your unit. Each unit's policy positions help to link members at the grassroots level, the Public Policy Staff at headquarters, and the Public Policy Committee. This is why the staff relies on you to look out for and convey the concerns of your unit members. Staff also relies on you to help mobilize your unit's members on issues requiring individual action on the part of the association members. For example, writing letters to elected officials or appropriate regulatory agencies.
The Government Affairs Platform guides the actions of the Public Policy Committee. As part of this platform SLA has created four issue statements. Please read the Government Affairs Platform and the statements. They should provide you with a starting point. Links to these documents are provided below.
Public Policy Central on virtual SLA is a source for additional information. On this page you can find the current Public Policy Update, position statements, announcements and other department information.
To be effective, we need everyone's input. Our goal is to pursue those professional issues that are important to the rank and file members. Please don't hesitate to let us know what issues you see on the horizon that we should be more closely reporting on and/or taking action.
We appreciate your input. If we can be of any assistance please contact us. Doug Newcomb, Director, Public Policy, can be reached by e-mailing doug@sla.org or calling (202) 939-3676.
Best regards,
Doug Newcomb
