About Barbie Keiser

For thirty years, Barbie Keiser has attempted to bring the availability of information sources to corporate management's attention and assist in maximizing their use. Her leadership in the information industry comes from her in-depth understanding of complex knowledge management issues and the potential applications for information in each task, client, and education opportunity she undertakes. She has been a member of SLA since 1980.

Her recent efforts have focused on information literacy program development and implementation, with particular emphasis on business information literacy projects around the world. Keiser has undertaken numerous consulting assignments for current clients and start-up corporations, publishers and other information providers, government agencies, and not-for-profit organizations around the world. Projects have included international information projects, conducted under the auspices of IDRC (Canada), the National Academy of Sciences (US), and the United States Information Agency in Thailand, Singapore, Denmark, Austria, Hungary and Germany. In addition, she was a Fulbright Senior Specialist in Slovenia (2004) and Lithuania (2007). She is a sought-after speaker at library and information industry events, worldwide, and a featured author in business, information, and library publications.

Keiser currently serves on the Board of Directors of the World Computer Exchange, a global education & environment nonprofit that helps connect youth in 67 developing countries to the skills, opportunities & understanding of the Internet while keeping working computers out of landfills.

Between 1977 and 1982, she provided research assistance for Gulf & Western's market planning and analysis effort; in 1982, Keiser established a central library/information resources center to facilitate management decisions and actions at The Penn Central Corporation (PCC). Successful at convincing management to recognize the importance of information to all areas of the business, Keiser left PCC to expand her efforts in innovative use and management of information. She now runs a consulting practice, enabling clients to use information effectively; she is perhaps best known for conducting needs assessments, audits, and opportunity analyses that provide the basis for strategic information planning and staff skill development programs.

Keiser has published a number of articles in business journals and newsletters, and has been a guest speaker at various information industry meetings, both in the U.S. and abroad. She is a co-author of Marketing Library Services: A Nuts-and-Bolts Approach and has turned the print work into a series of workshops for librarians, information specialists, and information providers which are offered around the world. She has worked extensively on SLA's Information Ethics initiative and currently serves as a member of the SLA Information Ethics Advisory Council and the International Information Exchange Caucus as a convener.

In 1987, she received the William T. Knox Award from Associated Information Managers (AIM); in 1999, she won the Shin Research Award from the International Insurance Society. She was an active member of the International Federation of Information and Documentation (FID) and served as the Chair of its Special Interest Group, Roles, Careers, and Opportunities for the Modern Information Professional.
