About Richard Geiger
Richard Geiger began his library career as a library assistant in the University of California library system. While attending library school, he became interested in special libraries and joined the student chapter of SLA in 1974 and has continued his membership for over 30 years. After graduating with a degree in Library and Information Science from UCLA, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and was soon working as a newspaper librarian at the San Francisco Chronicle. After a four-year stint as library manager of the San Jose Mercury-News, he returned to the Chronicle as their library director until his recent retirement.

Geiger began volunteering in the organization almost from the outset, first at a chapter level, then at the division level, eventually serving as president of the San Francisco Bay Region Chapter (1991) and chair of the News Division (1988). He also chaired organization-level committees (PR Committee in 1993, Strategic Planning in 1994 and Finance Committee in 2001) and served two terms on the SLA Board of Directors, a director (1993-96), and then treasurer (2001-2002).

Geiger is known for his enjoyment of people, hospitality, networking and just having fun. He?s expressed his interest and skills in music over the years within SLA by composing special songs for celebration and education. He has helped organize a number of special SLA receptions, usually with the help of his talented wife, Susan. He also enjoys woodworking and once built a cable car booth for the 1992 annual SLA conference in San Francisco that many SLA members still speak about and remember very fondly.

Geiger and his wife live in Castro Valley, California. His wife is a high school librarian. They enjoy boating, gardening and travel.
