2010 Recipient of the John Cotton Dana Award
Jim Tchobanoff
Information & Library Management Consultant
Arden Hills, Minn.
Jim Tchobanoff, an SLA member since 1976, is the 2010 recipient of the SLA John Cotton Dana Award.
Tchobanoff's roles in SLA have included president of the Minnesota chapter (1979-1980), chair of the Food Agriculture and Nutrition Division (1982-1983), and two terms on the Board of Directors (division cabinet chair 1983-1985 and director 1987-1990). Over the years, he dedicated much of his volunteer time to committee work. He chaired the Long Range Planning Committee (1984-1985), the Special Committee on Research (1985-1986), the Committee on Committees (1996-2000) and the Bylaws committee (1994-1996). He was member of the Committee on Committees (1980-1984), President's Task Force on the Value of Information (1986-1987), and the Association Office Operations Committee (1988-1990).
His accomplishments include development of SLA's first long-range strategic plan, creating the scope and research agenda for the association, and leading the membership effort that resulted in the expansion of SLA's professional development program. However, the testimonials and letters submitted in support of his nomination make clear that Tchobanoff's contributions to SLA as a diplomat, advisor, and mentor are greatly appreciated by his fellow members.
In addition to his service to the association, Tchobanoff has repeatedly demonstrated innovation in the information profession over a long and accomplished career. While working at Pillsbury Company for 25 years he oversaw the transition of their Technical Information Center to the Technology Knowledge Center and lead various teams that built a document warehouse system giving researchers access to over 100,000 documents in a variety of formats; created an R&D directory of employee expertise to harness Pillsbury's internal knowledge; and planned, designed and implemented an electronic project notebook system to help researchers access and share information.
Early in his career Tchobanoff established his tendency toward innovation by introducing the practice of embedded librarianship in the medical field. While working in the 1970s at University of Missouri Kansas City Medical Library as the senior clinical medical librarian Tchobanoff implemented the Clinical Medical Librarian Program. The librarians in this program made patient rounds as members of a teaching and patient care team, while simultaneously working as part of a four-member information services team funded by a 1972 demonstration grant from the National Library of Medicine. The program was ground-breaking and successfully introduced the concept of embedded medical librarians to the profession.
Tchobanoff graduated with a bachelor of science in chemistry (1968) and master of applied library science (1971) from the University of Michigan. He currently runs an independent library and information management consulting business in Arden Hills, Minn.
