Deeply committed to her profession, Jan's passion is encouraging and connecting with both students and information professionals in transition. Jan believes that mentoring is a meaningful way to for her to give back to a profession that has afforded her so many opportunities for growth. Cross-pollinating and sharing what she learns--in work settings, from formal and continuing education, and from leadership experiences in SLA--energize Jan professionally. She has professionally mentored numerous library practicum students from Dominican University and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and many librarians seeking new directions in their professional careers.

She also served on the Nominating Committee as chair (2010), on the President's Task Force on Professional Value (2005-2006), and the Annual Conference Advisory Council (2005 and 2011). She received the Dow Jones Leadership Award in 2000, and was named an SLA Fellow in 2006.
Jan is a frequent guest lecturer in Dominican University GSLIS program, and chaired its GSLIS Alumni Council. She currently is a member of the university's Library Advisory Board. She also team-taught Special Libraries with her fellow Illinois Chapter co-authors of Special Libraries: A Guide for Management (4th Edition).
In 2005, Jan co-authored a white paper on the future of librarians in business for the study, "The Future of Librarians in the Workplace", funded by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services.
