About David Shumaker
David Shumaker has served as Clinical Associate Professor and Director of the Information Commons at the School of Library and Information Science, Catholic University of America (CUA), since August 2006.
Since joining the faculty at CUA, Shumaker has discovered his real passion - recruiting students to the profession and promoting the values of special librarianship. He does this in a variety of ways. The students in his Marketing class get to experience real-life practicums in libraries all over the area. Beyond that, all library school students are invited to attend the popular Colloquiums that he organizes, taught by innovative librarians on a variety of interesting and engaging topics. Shumaker has led the establishment of a multipurpose collaborative space for the School, the Information Commons, impelled by his understanding that students need to share information and build relationships.
Shumaker is also passionate about SLA and the vital role it plays in the development of future information professionals. It is why he serves as the liaison for the student chapter of SLA at CUA, why he serves as Mentoring Chair for DCSLA, and why he ran for SLA Division Cabinet Chair-Elect. As he said, "If we strengthen Divisions, we strengthen the SLA experience."
Prior to coming to CUA, Shumaker was Manager of Information Services at MITRE. Earlier in his career, he was a Library of Congress Intern, a cataloger, and an automation specialist for the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
His dedication to SLA includes service on the Public Relations Advisory Council and the Government Affairs/Intellectual Property Committee, which he co-chaired in 1999-2000; a variety of positions with the Washington D.C. Chapter, including President in 2000-2001; and service for the Leadership and Management Division including Professional Development Chair, Continuing Education Chair, and Knowledge Management Section Chair. He is currently Program Chair for the Knowledge Management Division and Mentoring Chair for the DC Chapter. He is a member of the Information Technology, Knowledge Management, and Leadership and Management Divisions.
Shumaker is the co-editor of two editions of the Washington Area Library Directory and author of presentations for SLA Conferences and other events. In 2005, he was a co-author of a white paper on the future of librarians in business for the study, "The Future of Librarians in the Workplace", funded by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services. He holds a Bachelor's in Slavic Languages from UCLA, Master's Library Science degree from Drexel, and Master's in Management from the University of Maryland.
