Richard Huffine

Richard Huffine is a third-generation librarian and has been a practicing librarian in Washington, DC since 1996 when he relocated from Asheville, North Carolina. Richard moved to Washington, D.C., to take a position with a contractor to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Richard spent nine years working on library and information projects for the U.S. EPA, rising to the position of National Program Manager for the EPA's National Library Network. Richard is currently the National Library Coordinator for the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Virginia. The U.S. Geological Survey operates four branch libraries in Reston, Va., Denver, Colo., Flagstaff, Ariz., and Menlo Park, Calif. In addition, the Survey has 17 Science Center Libraries located in research facilities across the United States. The USGS Library is considered one of the largest natural science libraries in the United States.

In his personal life, Richard is also active in the community in support of public libraries in the District of Columbia. As president of the Friends of the Mount Pleasant Library and Treasurer of the Federation of Friends of the D.C. Public Library, he helps coordinate support and advocacy among Friends organizations across the District. Richard was President of the Federation from 2005 to 2009 and he is currently President-Elect of the District of Columbia Library Association (DCLA).

Richard has been an active member of the Special Libraries Association since 2004 when he was the founding Chair of the Government Information Division. The SLA Government Information Division is focused on networking and professional development for information professionals who manage and use government information as critical elements of their work. Richard has served on SLA's Public Policy Advisory Council since 2007, and he has been an active member of the Environment and Resource Management Division, the Information Technology Division, and the Knowledge Management Division.

Richard has also been an active member of the American Library Association since his time as an MLIS student at the University of Norh Carolina - Greensboro. Richard is a member of the Government Documents Round Table, the Maps and Geography Round Table, and is currently the President of the Federal and Armed Forces Round Table (2009-2010). Richard served on the ALA Subcommittee on Federal Libraries in 2006-2008 and currently services on the Electronic Government and Government Information Services Subcommittess of the ALA Committee on Legislation.

Richard has previously served as an elected member of the Federal Libraries and Information Centers Committee, and in 2004, he co-chaired a Working Group on the Catagorization of Government Information under the E-Gov Act of 2002.
