Jill Hurst-Wahl joined SLA in 1990 and has been a corporate librarian for two organizations, Corning Incorporated and Manning & Napier. Because of her passion for fueling decision-making processes with accurate information, Jill created her consulting firm, Hurst Associates, Ltd., where she works directly with information professionals and their organizations. Since 2001, Jill has been teaching at Syracuse University and is now an assistant professor of practice in the university's School of Information Studies.
As an instructor, consultant, author/blogger and speaker, Jill focuses on digitization, digital libraries, copyright, Web 2.0, and business research. She believes that technology can be used to make information more accessible, organizations more transparent, and people easier to find. A member of the Upstate New York Chapter, Jill has held several positions including business manager, president (1998-1999), archivist and chapter liaison to the SU student group. Jill is currently a member of the Information Technology Division, Leadership & Management Division and Baseball Caucus. She is past co-chair of LMD's Consulting Section (2008-2009) and a past chair of the IT Division's Blogging Section (2007). She presently serves the IT Division as its Professional Development Chair.
Jill currently serves SLA at the association-level as a member of the Information Outlook Advisory Council. She chaired the Second Life Workgroup (2008) and the Association Networking Committee (2001-2003). She was also a member of the Association Task Force on Meetings and Conference (2000-2001).
In addition to her SLA activities, Jill is a member of the New York State Regents Advisory Council on Libraries and the USNY Technology Policy and Practices Council.
Jill received her MLS from the University of Maryland and her BA from Elmira College. A resident of Central New York, she likes working in the yard to grow flowers, herbs and a few vegetables. She enjoys spicy foods and has become a connoisseur of hot sauces.
