Marilyn Bromley
Incoming Director
Marilyn is library director at The Bureau of National Affairs, Inc. (BNA) and has been active in SLA since joining in 1978. She was president of the Washington, D.C. Chapter in 1992-1993, and served twice as chapter treasurer, in 1984-1987 and 1996-1999. She was program planner for the Legal Division (DLEG) for the SLA 2007 Annual Conference in Denver, bringing the division's conference to a close with a healthy surplus. She has been the DLEG Awards & Grants chair since 2009, expanding the travel grants program with additional funding and world-wide member outreach. She is currently past chair of the Social Science Division (DSOC).
During her tenure as chair of DSOC, Marilyn focused on improving and increasing communication to members and amongst the DSOC board, created and appointed members to a new communications committee as part of the division's 2010-2012 strategic plan, and engaged and encouraged new division members to become liaisons to key SLA committees and initiatives.
At the association level, Marilyn has been a member of the Bylaws Committee (chair in 2002-2003), the Finance Committee, the Tellers Committee (chair in 1996-1998), and the Committee on Association Governance. She is currently a member of the Washington, D.C. Chapter, Social Science Division, Legal Division, Competitive Intelligence Division and Information Technology Division. Her attendance at every SLA annual conference since 1984 demonstrates her commitment to SLA and the profession, her focus on continual learning, and her recognition of the value of member-to-member networking.
Marilyn's professional interests include copyright issues, competitive intelligence (CI), and the use of return-on-investment tools to demonstrate the value of the corporate library. In 2002, she and the library staff successfully proved a positive ROI of their work for BNA. Online searching has always been one of Marilyn's major areas of expertise and her passion, and in June 2002 she was selected a Dialog InfoStar.
Marilyn has been library director at The Bureau of National Affairs, Inc. since 1994, and a member of its library staff since 1983. In addition to managing the library and a staff of seven, she and three members of the staff provide permission services for BNA. She also directs the work of the BNA intranet staff, works with BNA's general counsel on copyright issues, and delivers daily competitive intelligence alerts and research to BNA stakeholders. Her internal CI blog provides competitive information to BNA's field sales force throughout the country. As in-house consultants in the product development process, Marilyn and the library staff are involved in creating high-quality value-added products for BNA customers. Prior to joining BNA, Marilyn managed a one-person library for five years at ICF Incorporated, and remembers well the challenges of being a solo librarian.
Marilyn has a BA in religion from Randolph-Macon Woman's College, and a MSLS from The Catholic University of America. She gives back to her local community by serving as a citizen member of the board of the Alexandria Law Library, a public law library in the city of Alexandria. Her outside interests include birding, vacationing in Nantucket, choral singing and sewing.
