Since joining SLA, Deb has been honored to serve her profession and colleagues in a number of ways. Most recently, she served as a director on the SLA Board of Directors (2008-2010), chaired the creation and recent update of online professional development initiative, SLA's 23 Things, and is currently chair of the Leadership and Management Division (LMD) Nominating Committee. She has served on the Information Ethics Advisory Council (2008-2010) and is currently serving on the Professional Development Advisory Council (2008-present).
Deb received an SLA Presidential Citation for 23 Things and was awarded the Karen J. Swit Leadership Award from the Leadership and Management Division in 2009. Deb was featured in the SLA Member Profile in the July 2006 issue of Information Outlook ("As Easy as Jumping Off a Cliff") on pages 10-12.
Deb has served as a leader in the San Francisco Bay Region Chapter, serving as chapter president, initiating the first chapter listserv in 2000 and chairing various committees. She received the chapter's Professional Achievement Award in 2002. She is also a member of the Silicon Valley Chapter.
She has been profiled by Information World Review (Feb. 5, 2010) and has authored many articles, including "Demonstrating Your Value 2.0" in Best Practices in Government Libraries 2010. She is a member of the Knowledge Management, Information Technology, and Leadership and Management Divisions as well as the Content Buying and Consulting sections of LMD.
Deb is an independent information professional and Principal of Information Edge, which specializes in value-added research, knowledge services, enterprise content management, and library creation and automation. She is an active member in the Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP) and served on its Board of Directors from 2001-2003.
For 14 years, Deb was a senior information specialist at the Exploratorium, an interactive museum in San Francisco. Her responsibilities included developing and maintaining the Exploratorium website and community building in the formal and informal education communities worldwide. Deb co-chaired a major internal information infrastructure and Division of Advertising and Marketing (DAM) initiative, implementing knowledge management services to improve staff access to internal and external sources of information.
Deb has worked and consulted in a number of different library types, including academic, special and medical. She received her MLS degree from UC Berkeley. Ever-striving to enhance her career agility and skills, Deb recently completed a certificate program in enterprise content management.
Deb participates in the information community, giving back to the profession that has given her so much. She teaches part-time in a library paraprofessional program at a local community college and has also taught for the League of Women Voters, InfoPeople and UC Berkeley Extension. She has presented at many conferences including SLA, CENIC (Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California), the California Library Association, Internet@Schools, and Internet Librarian. Deb is a past president (twice) of BayNet (San Francisco Bay Area Library and Information Network), a multi-type library association fostering cooperative activities between different library types.
Deb and her husband, Dave, live in San Leandro, California and have 4 grown children and two rescue dogs, Serendipity and Wiggy, whom they accompany to the dog park regularly.
