Hal Kirkwood
Incoming Director

Hal Kirkwood has 16 years of experience in academic libraries. He acquired his masters in library and information science from the University of South Carolina at Columbia. He joined SLA while pursuing his MLIS when a faculty mentor, Bob Williams, took a small group of students to the 1993 SLA Annual Conference in Cincinnati. The trip to Cincinnati opened the doors to the full scope of what was possible as an information professional, and he has been an involved member of SLA ever since. Professionally, Hal has worked as business reference librarian and information technology librarian at the State University of New York at Geneseo. At Purdue University, he has been reference coordinator, instructor coordinator, and is currently associate head of the Management & Economics Library.

Hal's interests include business information literacy, problem-based learning, database and Web usability, concept-mapping, and innovative library space design. Hal is an accomplished author, published in the Journal of Business & Finance Librarianship, Library Journal, College & Undergraduate Libraries, Online, SLAs Business & Finance Division Bulletin, and several other publications. Hal has presented at SLA Annual Conferences, Computers in Libraries, Internet Librarian, Online World, Decision Sciences Institute, and several other national and regional conferences. He has been awarded the John H. Moriarty Award for Excellence in Librarianship from the Purdue University Libraries, as well as the Class of 1922 Helping Students Learn Award from Purdue University.

Within SLA, Hal is currently a member of the Business & Finance Division, Competitive Intelligence Division, and the Indiana Chapter. He has been an active member of SLA, serving as the first Webmaster for the Indiana Chapter, the first Webmaster for the Business & Finance Division, chair of the College & University Business Librarians Roundtable (now Section), awards chair of the Business & Finance Division, and chair of the Business & Finance Division for the SLA 2007 Annual Conference in Denver. Membership in the Special Libraries Association has provided Hal with numerous professional development opportunities and invaluable professional contacts and friendships over the years.
