Anne Koopman
Incoming Division Cabinet Chair-Elect
Ann has been an active member of SLA for more years than she likes to think about. Most recently, she has served on the Strategic Planning Committee and the Nominating Committee for the Science-Technology (Sci-Tech) Division. She has also served Sci-Tech as its division chair, treasurer, program planner (twice!), vendor relations chair and assistant editor for the Sci-Tech News quarterly bulletin. She has participated in Sci-Tech's student mentor program and Contributed Papers Committee. Ann was the program planner who started the popular "Science of..." series, the Sci-Tech Division's contributed papers program, and a multi-year arc of programs on the theme of open access, alternative publishing models, and institutional repositories. While she is also a member of Biomedical and Life Sciences Division (DBIO) and Information Technology Division (DITE), Sci-Tech has been her main focus of volunteer activity.
At the chapter level, Ann has served the Philadelphia Chapter as treasurer for 3 terms, as a student mentor, and as hospitality/meeting support chair. She also chaired the chapter's student scholarship committee (Knower Fund Committee) and introduced its annual auction event to ensure the fund's long-term financial support. She represented the Philadelphia Chapter as treasurer of a joint SLA/MLA (Medical Library Association) regional conference, "Collaborations, Partnerships, and Solutions: The QuintEssential Conference" (2003). She also served for 1 year as chair-elect for the Indiana Chapter, but was unable to complete that multi-year sequence when her family moved to Philadelphia.
Ann has presented papers and assisted with continuing education courses at SLA annual conferences, so she knows what it's like to be on both sides of the podium. She has authored several practical articles about the use of various tools in her library environment. She maintains memberships in MLA and ALA/ACRL, but SLA is her professional home.
Ann earned her library degree at the Graduate Library School of the University of Chicago. She holds a BA in anthropology and religion from Lawrence University (Wisconsin), and has completed additional coursework in chemistry, accounting, math and computer science at Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) and Rutgers University. In her youth, Ann was the proprietor of a paper conservation, marbling and bookbinding studio. A bit more practically, she moved on to become a science and engineering librarian at IUPUI. Since 1995, she has worked in a number of roles at Thomas Jefferson University, a school devoted to the health sciences, where she is currently manager of her library's Web service, JEFFLINE.
Outside of work, Ann enjoys a variety of hobbies. If you want to see her eyes dance, pretend to be interested in her African violet collection.
