Incoming Chapter Cabinet Chair-Elect

Debbie Schachter is now the director of learning resources at Douglas College in New Westminster, British Columbia. She joined the Douglas College, the largest baccalaureate college in British Columbia, in August 2011. Prior to joining the college, Debbie held the positions of director, technology & collection management with the Vancouver Public Library (VPL) in British Columbia, Canada, from 2009-2011, and as the manager, East Area in 2008.

Debbie has also worked in a variety of special library and non-profit positions, including associate executive director for the Jewish Family Service Agency; head, strategic planning & development / associate executive director, B.C. Courthouse Library Society; and systems librarian, Pacific Press Library.

Debbie has been active in SLA through the Western Canada Chapter (WCC) for many years, as chapter president in 2009, alignment ambassador in 2009 and 2010, treasurer, and communications director, and several other positions. She is incoming treasurer of the British Columbia Library Association in 2011, and a delegate representing the Americas to the OCLC Global Council since 2010.

Debbie was recognized for her contribution to the Western Canada Chapter through the SLA WCC's Outstanding Information Professional Award in 2007.

Debbie writes a regular column in SLA's Information Outlook on business and management issues, and is a regular guest lecturer on a variety of topics at the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia, and co-instructs supervision for library technicians at Langara College in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Debbie completed a masters' of library science in 1990 from the University of British Columbia and a masters' of business administration in the management of technology from Simon Fraser University in 2002.
