PRACTICES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF REPRESENTATIVES

TO OTHER ORGANIZATIONS AND AGENCIES

I. Practice

It is the practice of Special Libraries Association to provide guidance to its members who serve as representatives to other organizations.

II. Purpose

SLA Representatives are appointed for the purpose of assisting the SLA Board of Directors in carrying out the objectives of the Association. Duties and responsibilities relating to the conduct of the Association business are delegated to Representatives by the Board of Directors; representatives report to and are directly responsible to the Board.

Information regarding Representatives is contained in Association Bylaws Article XV, Section 3. (See Appendix 1) This manual is an amplification, clarification, and interpretation of the Bylaws.

Objectives

1. To further communications and understanding between SLA and the other bodies.

2. To represent, protect, and promote the interests of the Association with other bodies.

3. To provide feedback of significant news of the other organization.

4. To become knowledgeable of the objectives and the programs of other associations, and to ascertain where action and involvement on the part of SLA are pertinent and desirable.

5. To contribute expertise in keeping with SLA purposes and to strengthen SLA program activities in overlapping areas of responsibility.

Representative's Responsibility

1. Attend scheduled conferences and other meetings when feasible.

2. Participate in meetings and engage in communication related to projects, programs, and varied activities.

3. Prepare reports and provide immediate feedback to SLA for purposes of information and action.

4. Make recommendations to SLA regarding continuing cooperation, joint undertakings, and meaningful programs.

5. Submit a written annual report of its activities.

Suggestions for Communications

1. Identify self as a liaison to the staff and officers of the other organizations as appropriate.

2. Check to be sure that as the Representative you are currently informed of SLA policies an activities in the area of your assignment.

3. Report immediately to the Board Proctor (immediate Past President) anything that calls for action or response by SLA.
