    Approved.

  4. OM0809CC-A01 Taxonomy Division petition (Rink)
Rink introduced this item explaining that there were 200 signatures from members and interest from non-members who had pledged to join if the division was approved. He proposed the motion: 'That the Board authorize the creation of the Taxonomy Division.'

Lachance thanked Tom Rink and Linda Broussard for their work in helping with the creation of this division. She also recognised that it was good to have high levels of interest from non-members.

    APPROVED BY UNANIMOUS VOTE

Zamora advised Board members to use the creation of this division as an example of how agile the Association can be.

  5. OM0809CC-A02 New York/Long Island Chapter merger  (Fifer Canby)
Fifer-Canby introduced this item explaining that the two chapters had voted to merge, there was no financial impact and appropriate governing documents had been amended. She proposed the motion 'That the Board of Directors approve the merger of the Long Island and the New York Chapters effective 1 September 2009.'

Caputo queried the date of the Board approval of the amendment on the new chapter's governing documents; Linda Broussard was asked to check this.

    APPROVED BY UNANIMOUS VOTE

  6. Executive Session Item

  7. Alignment update (Lachance)
Lachance announced that the portal was due to launch in the next week or so. This week the Alignment Ambassadors, Fellows and Board were sent the alignment presentation and provided with an update on the training webinar to be scheduled in early September.

  8. Books Coalition/Alliance update (Lachance)
Lachance explained that SLA had been invited, and the Board had agreed, to join a new alliance that was questioning the Google Books Settlement. SLA had been asked to join this alliance (led by Internet Archive with other members such as Microsoft) based on its position of asking questions and enquiring into practical implications of the book settlement. Lachance confirmed that this was a new venture for SLA and one that left it in a unique and important place.
  9. Visits (Caputo, Lachance and Zamora)
Caputo spoke at the American Chemistry Society meeting in DC recently, and is currently on a visit to Portland, OR and will be meeting with the Oregon chapter later this month.

Lachance has been at ASAE's annual meeting in Toronto. From there she travels to Milan, Italy for the IFLA conference. She will be in Germany providing a keynote speech at Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Spezialbibliotheken's conference at University of Karlsruhe.

Zamora has just returned from a visit to Boston where she met with the chapter and had a visit to The Mitre group. At both events she presented on the alignment project, which was well received.

  10. New Business
Caputo notified the Board that she was having a teleconference call with Australia/New Zealand Chapter leaders tomorrow since they had suffered several resignations: President Elect and Treasurer.

Blankson-Hemans said that the Inclusion caucus was similarly finding it difficult to fill volunteer leadership positions.

Caputo alerted the candidates and Board that she plans to set up two conference calls in early September to allow the President-Elect and any other candidates talk to the non-North American members.

  11. Adjourn
Call adjourned at 12:25 pm US Eastern Time
