- Strategic Planning Initiative (Cindy/Anne)
This discussion will be picked up in August after the return of several key people from various travels. Cara Schatz briefed the Board on the next steps in the alignment process, which will include email blasts over the next several weeks with the vision, mission, and core value statements shortly followed by a survey, in several parts, with results displayed in real time providing us with instant polling. Additional activities include a Video/Essay contest and a compilation of case studies. The PRAC is re-engaging the alignment ambassadors to help. Cara predicts that the statements will be presented to the Board for approval at the October Board meeting. At the Leadership Summit meeting in January, headquarters expects to be ready to roll out more of the branding, possibly including the tag line and unified branding standards. Discussion included comments that members still connect the concept of alignment to the name-change. The PRAC is discussing this. Another comment stressed the importance of helping members recognize that there are two parallel streams with alignment, one for members and one for the profession. - Alignment Tool Kit Update (Mary Ellen Bates)
Mary Ellen Bates reported that she received excellent submissions from the exercises at the conference and will be updating the wiki in the near future. CEO Lachance thanked Mary Ellen for building this tangible asset for our members. - Conference Debriefing (All)
Board members offered their comments regarding the conference, including the positive factor of bringing a $5 million boost to the local economy and a concern regarding the communications model for leadership. The Board recognizes the challenges in changing existing protocols, and President-Elect Cindy Romaine was enthusiastic about the foreshadowing for things on the horizon. - Visits (Anne Caputo, Cindy Romaine, and Janice Lachance)
CEO Lachance reported that she is currently in Kanazawa, Japan for the annual Library Roundtable held at the Kanazawa Institute of Technology where she will be speaking about the role of special librarians in e-learning. The roundtable has been an annual event since the US Library of Congress helped rebuild Nat?l Diet library after WWII. Her next trip will be to IFLA , then to ASAE in Los Angeles for her last meeting as a member of that Board.
President Caputo attended the ALA conference with Janice Lachance where they represented SLA at the Presidents? Council and reported about our annual meeting. Our president also represented SLA at the World of Digital Libraries, sponsored by the Library of Congress. Anne Caputo also reported that the libraries for the Department of Justice are interested in having SLA develop a special avenue dealing with intelligence analysis, possibly as a certificate program. She will be traveling to Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia for Dow Jones, and will be returning to New Orleans for additional work on relief/rebuilding projects. - New business
