Michael Kim works for the University of Miami Libraries as Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services. In his current position, he supervises and mentors 4 faculty / 15 staff members, and is responsible for the library's cataloging and metadata operations & services, ensuring the department meets the needs of both internal and external customers of the UM libraries in this rapidly changing internet and electronic information environment.

As a native South Korean, he served in the South Korean Air Force Intelligence at the rank of Lieutenant. Before joining the University of Miami Library faculty, he worked for Oklahoma State University Library as a tenured librarian. At Oklahoma State University he was a co-chair of the six-state South Central Voyager Users Group Meeting in 2007, and planned and led a successful conference in the same year.

Michael has been active in SLA throughout his career. He currently serves on the SLA Technical Standard Committee. He served on the SLA Committee on Cataloging. 

At the chapter level, he was SLA Oklahoma Chapter President-Elect in 2007 and served in the Chapter Director position. After relocating to South Florida this year, he immediately joined the Florida & Caribbean Chapter and is looking forward to actively participating in the Chapter activities. 

At the Division level, he has been very active in SLA Information Technology Division, serving as Information Systems Section Chair and editor of the Division's highly recognized online publication, b/ITe, over the years. He is currently serving his second two year term as SLA Information Technology Division Secretary.   

As an immigrant to the US, Michael likes to travel around the different parts of the US and has so far visited 44 different states. He recently relocated to Miami, "the gateway of Americas" and enjoys the beautiful sunshine and warm weather in South Florida.

SLA has been an extremely important part of Michael's professional career growth through networking, current awareness, and professional development. Michael sees a global organization in SLA, which has been thriving to reach out and "connect people and information" on a global scale. He wants to give back more than he has received from SLA and to contribute more to the association and its members by serving as a Director.
