Karen Reczek
Biography
Karen Reczek is Senior Manager of Bureau Veritas' Information Resources Center. She has responsibility for information and research services; knowledge and content management; and competitive intelligence functions. Prior to joining Bureau Veritas in 1996, she served in progressive positions in Scientific Information Resources & Services at the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company.
Additionally, Karen is an adjunct faculty member at the University at Buffalo, Department of Library and Information Studies (DLIS), where she has taught on Special Libraries and Competitive Intelligence. She is also currently Chair of the DLIS Advisory Board, and faculty advisor to the University at Buffalo's SLA Student Group.
Karen has served SLA at the local level in several leadership roles and later, as President of the Upstate NY Chapter. She served in many capacities at the SLA Division level, including past Chair of the Pharmaceutical and Health Technology Division, and was a founding member and first Chair of both the Competitive Intelligence Division and the Knowledge Management Division.
Karen has also served at the International level on the SLA Board of Directors as the 2001-2003 Division Cabinet Chair and as Secretary of the Board. She was Chair of the 2002-2004 Governance Task Force, Chair of the 2006 Baltimore Annual Conference Program Planning Committee, and she served on the 2005-2006 Executive Leadership Task Force. Karen has also served as a member of various international committees, including Strategic Planning, Awards and Honors, Bylaws, and Professional Development. Karen is currently serving as a member of the Centennial Commission and the 2009 Annual Conference Program Planning Committee. In 2004, she was named a Fellow of SLA. In 2008, Karen received the Dialog (Thomson Reuters) Quantum (North America) InfoStar award.
Karen also held several positions with the local regional consortia, the Western NY Library Resources Council, including President of the Board of Trustees, Chair of the Regional Automation Committee and Chair of the Continuing Education Committee. Karen is also a Past President of the Western NY Health Sciences Librarians group.
Karen has presented at numerous professional conferences, and developed workshops on marketing, and establishing the value of library and information services. She is the author of the book, Establishing an Information Center: A practical guide, published by Bowker-Saur.
Karen has a BA in Social Sciences and Humanities from Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY. She holds an MLS from the University at Buffalo.
Karen lives in Buffalo, NY, with her husband and 4-year old daughter. She is passionate about everything food (and wine), loves cooking, and foreign films.
