SLA Members Have Voted on Bylaws Amendment

The SLA Board of Directors has approved a plan to create a more flexible dues system while ensuring that SLA programs, services, and initiatives can continue to provide value for the member?s investment.  For this plan to be enacted, you and your fellow members must approve an amendment to the SLA Bylaws regarding changes to the Association?s dues.

The full, student and retired SLA member will be eligible to cast online ballots beginning 15 September and continuing until 5:00 PM EDT (21:00 GMT) on 7 October.  Those members who have not provided electronic mail addresses to SLA Headquarters will receive a printed ballot by post.

Just the Facts

The SLA Board of Directors and Finance Committee worked with the SLA Chapter and Division Cabinets to address a growing need for greater flexibility in the Association?s dues, so that those just entering the profession, those living and working in less affluent economies, and those working part-time could receive some relief.

In order for the Board-approved plan to take effect, the SLA membership must approve an amendment to the SLA Bylaws that would eliminate a 12 percent cap on any dues increase.

If the bylaws amendment is approved, the Board-approved dues restructuring would take effect on 1 January 2006.  Changes in amounts due will affect existing members when renewal of membership occurs.

The Proposed Amendment

The Board proposes to amend Article IV, Section 3 by deleting the italicized text in brackets and adding the bold, underlined text shown below:

Section 3.  Determination of Membership Dues and Obligation to Pay.  Membership in the Association carries a definite obligation to pay any membership dues and assessments established by the board.  The board shall fix the amount of membership dues and/or assessments (if any) for all membership classes each year[under the following limitations: a) dues may not be increased at any one time by more than 12% of the current dues and b) dues may not be increased more than once in a three year time period.] and reserves the right to increase the membership dues once every three years.
