A Look to the Future
A Look to the Future SLA committed to the future in 2005 in a variety of ways; none were more dramatic than the changes to the Association’s bylaws that were approved by the membership.

At the Association’s Annual Business Meeting in June, the membership approved two amendments to the bylaws:

  • A realignment of the SLA Governance Year – the schedule for transition of unit and Association volunteer leaders (previously June to June) – with the Association’s fiscal year (based on a calendar year starting 1 January).

  • Removal of language that paved the way for members to vote online for future bylaws amendments or for Board of Directors elections.

In September, after the SLA Board had approved a new dues structure for full membership, SLA members voted online for the very first time in the Association’s history. In this case, members voted to remove language that facilitated the implementation of that new dues structure, which includes two tiers based on salary.

Collectively, these amendments to SLA’s bylaws mark a seminal point in SLA history. Members and volunteer leaders are taking action to modernize the member experience, and these changes had a significant impact on the future of SLA.

To keep the membership focusing on the future, SLA President Pam Rollo requested the creation of six new task forces to explore strategic areas for growth and change. These task forces will work until June 2006 when their findings will be reported to the SLA Board of Directors. President Rollo has also created two Collaborative Strategic Work Groups that will begin the process of implementing the findings of these task forces, beginning in June. The work groups consist of staff and members of the Board of Directors, and will focus on two key areas: communicating the value of the profession and strategic alignment of the association.
