SLA Recognizes Five Early-Career Information Professionals as Rising Stars
Alexandria, Virginia, October 21, 2009 -- Special Libraries Association (SLA) honored Michelle Dollinger, Julie Fleischhacker, Abby Thorne, Margaret Ostrander, and Norah Xiao as the 2009 recipients of the SLA Rising Star Award at the SLA 2009 Annual Conference & INFO-EXPO in Washington, D.C. This is the first time that SLA has awarded this honor. Anne Mintz Named 2009 Recipient of the SLA Professional Award
Alexandria, Virginia, September 30, 2009 - Anne Mintz has been named the 2009 recipient of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) Professional Award for her efforts to educate others on issues of intentional misinformation on the Web, her accomplishments in writing for the field of information specialists, and for her dedication to teaching SLA members, journalists and news professionals about information literacy. This award, given annually in recognition of a special event, major achievement or significant contribution by an SLA member that advances the profession's growth and the association's goals, is sponsored by Springer, which provides each recipient with a cash award of $1,000.

Diverse Coalition Unites to Counter Google Book Settlement
San Francisco, August 26, 2009 - Librarians, legal scholars, authors, publishers, and technology companies today announced the formation of a coalition that will counter the proposed Google Book Settlement in its current form. The proposed settlement is between Google, the Association of American Publishers (AAP), and the Authors' Guild. Approval of the settlement plan currently is pending before the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. The deal is also currently being investigated by the U.S. Justice Department on antitrust grounds.

SLA Forms New Professional Interest Group for Taxonomy Professionals

SLA Members Receive 10 Percent Discount on Tuition for Kent State Master's Program

San Jose State Offers SLA Members-Only Cohort
Alexandria, Virginia, February 24, 2009--A unique learning cohort is now available for information professionals who want to earn a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) with a focus on business skills and executive-level training. This cohort is the result of a partnership between Special Libraries Association (SLA) and San Jose State University (SJSU) School of Library and Information Science. SJSU's Executive MLIS program is designed for library or information science professionals with at least three years of experience who do not already hold an MLIS. The SLA cohort is scheduled to start in June 2009.

2010 Board of Directors Candidates Announced
Alexandria, Virginia, February 18, 2009 - SLA has nominated eight candidates to run for election to the 2010 SLA Board of Directors. The candidates were identified by the SLA Nominating Committee, which annually solicits names of potential candidates from the membership, and is responsible for putting together a slate of candidates that has exceptional talent, is professionally diverse, and provides regionally balanced representation.
