EPA Officials Brief SLA on Plans to Reestablish Closed Libraries by September 2008

Alexandria, Virginia, 27 March 2008 - The Special Libraries Association (SLA) today met with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials to review the agency's report to the U.S. Congress on the future direction of its library network. The report, submitted on 26 March, explains the steps EPA intends to take to reopen libraries closed over the last two years, and details how the agency will allocate an additional $1 million dollars for libraries provided in the FY08 EPA budget earmarked for that purpose. Special Libraries Association Lauds Government Accountability Office Report on EPA Library Closures
GAO Findings Echo SLA Concerns about Lack of User Input, Inadequate Document Digitization Strategy and Compromised Accessibility to Public Health Information
Alexandria, Virginia, 18 March 2008 -- The Special Libraries Association (SLA) today applauded the U.S. Government Accountability Office's (GAO) recent report on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) library closures. The report issued 13 March was requested by the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee in February 2007 following an outcry by the public and the library community at the destruction of environmentally sensitive documents and restriction of access to important public health information contained in the EPA libraries. SLA Board of Directors Announces Recipients of 2007 SLA Research Grants
International Growth and Embedded Librarianship Focus of Proposals
Alexandria, Virginia, 7 March, 2008 - The Special Libraries Association (SLA), a nonprofit global organization for innovative information professionals and their strategic partners, announced that its Board of Directors recently awarded two SLA Research Grants chosen from proposals collected during 2007. SLA offers grants for research projects for the advancement of evidence-based practice within library and information science and projects that directly benefit the operations of SLA, its chapters, divisions or committees, and support the association's expanding global agenda. The investment made by SLA in these projects will yield direct benefits to the association and, the results will be shared with the membership at their completion. Full Text.

SLA Board of Directors Ready to Innovate in 2008
Leadership Summit in January Serves as Kick Off for a Busy Association Year, President Abram Outlines Initiatives for 2008
Alexandria, Virginia, 5 March, 2008 - The 2008 SLA Board of Directors hit the ground running at the Louisville Leadership Summit. The three-day meeting was the first meeting of the new association year and is also the first time the new board members elected in 2007 officially joined the sitting board as full voting members. 2008 SLA President Stephen Abram MLS, took office, and challenged the 2008 Board to focus on innovation for the association over the coming year, declaring his theme for the year, "Innovate in 2008."
