FAQ on New Visual Identity
FAQ on New Visual Identity

Q: If this is an Association initiative, why are the units being asked to implement these changes?
A: Branding initiatives are always more recognizable, accepted, effective and add value when they are widely and consistently used. SLA needs each unit to incorporate the new visual identity into communications tools and other applications requiring visually recognizable imagery so that we can maximize the brand of our global network.

Q: Our unit logo is a major part of our own unique identity. Are you asking the units to replace their existing logos with the new SLA visual identity?
A: SLA fully understands that many units wish to maintain a subordinate brand and identity. We are not asking the units to replace their existing logos but to incorporate the Association's visual identity into the presentation of any communications tools or other applications along with that unit's existing visual identity. This will aid the uninitiated reader or visitor in understanding that there is a link between your unit and the Association.

Q: Where should we use the new visual identity?
A: Use the new Association visual identity on all SLA unit Web sites, newsletters, letterhead, and other media created for communication with SLA members, partners or publics. This does NOT preclude the use of other visual imagery, such as that used to create a unique look for your unit.

Q: Where should we place the new SLA visual identity and should it be more prominent than our unit logo?
A: The Association's visual identity should be placed at the head (top) of your unit's Web site, newsletter, or other communications tools. You have flexibility in the size and placement on the header, but SLA recommends placement in the upper left, upper center, or upper right positions of the header for your communications tools.

Q: Our unit has a large supply of stationary with the existing SLA visual identity. This could present us with a significant and unexpected impact to our budget. How quickly should we make such changes?
A: SLA units are under no pressure to implement the new SLA visual identity in situations where inventories of existing supplies are significant or major purchases were recently made. SLA expects each unit to exhaust existing supplies and materials before making the changes.

Q: How many tag lines will there be and how do we know which ones to use?
A: For now, SLA units should use the existing visual identity with "Connecting People with Information" incorporated into it. The tagline is a part of the current logo. A unit may use the tag line "Connecting People with Information" throughout any publications, separate from the logo. SLA Headquarters staff is currently reviewing the possibility of using additional taglines. If this occurs, units will have the flexibility to use variations on the visual identity in specific situations.

Q: Will there be a version of the Association's visual identity without the tag line?
A: At present, this option will not be available. It is possible that a tag line-free visual identity might be offered at a later date.

Q: When do you expect the units to implement these changes?
A: All electronic communications should be converted to the new visual identity within the next 60 days. However, SLA understands that the target date may be difficult to achieve in some situations. We ask that you strive for that date with the awareness that your work could take more time.
Other communications tools and applications should be implemented as quickly as possible, but we will institute no target dates at this point. If SLA staff can assist you, please let us know.

Q: Does SLA offer any style guides to assist the units?
A: A revised style guide is currently being developed and will be posted to the SLA Web site soon. You will be notified once it is posted.

Q: Where can I download different versions of the logo?
A: The SLA Web site features a logo download page that contains a variety of file types and sizes. Go to http://www.sla.org/content/SLA/pressroom/SLAlogos.cfm.

Q: Where can I get additional assistance on implementation of SLA's New Visual Identity if needed?
A: For additional information, consultation or actual assistance on the new visual identity, contact John Crosby at +1.202.939.3629; email: jcrosby@sla.org.
