Special Libraries Association Recognizes Sharon Lenius with
2007 Member Achievement Award

U.S. National Guard Librarian Instrumental to the Success of the
Government Information & Military Librarians Divisions of SLA

Alexandria, Virginia, USA - 28 November 2007 -- The 2007 Special Libraries Association (SLA) Member Achievement Award, sponsored this year by Thomson Scientific and Dialog, is awarded to U.S. National Guard's Sharon Lenius. Lenius is a widely known and highly regarded SLA member whose commitment to promoting the work done by government and military librarians is unsurpassed. She has, over the last 17 years, shown considerable dedication to raising visibility, awareness, and appreciation of the information profession through her efforts to champion the specialized government and military work done by SLA members around the world.

Lenius was a driving force in the creation of a new SLA division for government librarians. Her nominators wrote, "As a founding member and its secretary, Sharon has taken an active leadership role in the formation of the SLA Government Information Division (DGI), envisioning it as a strong, effective partner to the association's Military Librarians Division (MLD) in advocating solutions to government information needs at all levels. Her record of hard work and innovative ideas distinguishes her as a leader in the field of special librarianship."

Lenius' achievements and her obvious dedication to SLA are detailed in video that was shown during the SLA Awards Ceremony in June of 2007. A podcast of the award video is available on the SLA Web site here: www.sla.org/content/SLA/awardsrecognition/memberachievement/index.cfm.

About the Recipient: 2007 SLA Member Achievement Award
Sharon Lenius has been a member of SLA since 1990 and she has been active in both the MLD and the Washington D.C. Chapter since she joined. For the chapter, she has been public relations chair and professional development chair. She has regularly represented the local military librarians group of the D.C. Chapter on the chapter's advisory committee to the board of directors. For this work she was a recipient of the 2004 Washington D.C. Chapter Board of Directors Award.

Her contributions to her primary division, Military Librarians, have been many. Lenius served as chair-elect, chair and past chair during the period 2000-2003 as well as secretary for the division since 2004 until 2007. She has frequently written articles for the division's bulletin, The Military Librarian. Lenius designed the MLD web page as part of a three-person working group; planned MLD's 50th anniversary celebration; introduced the motion which resulted in MLD's contribution of $3,500 in division funds to the SLA Professional Development Campaign (the first time an SLA unit contributed to this fund); and served as resources committee chair, finding vendor sponsorships for division activities at SLA Annual Conferences and INFO EXPO, and for the annual Military Librarians Workshop. For her work, she was recognized with the MLD Distinguished Service Award in 2003.

She has had a love for libraries since childhood. Her first job was as a library page at the age of 16. Her career ultimately led her to the U.S. National Guard, Joint Staff, where she has worked as a librarian for 18 years.
