SLA ANNOUNCES BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION RESULTS
Anne Caputo of Dow Jones Is 2009 President-Elect

Alexandria, Virginia, October 2, 2008 - The Special Libraries Association (SLA) announced the results of its Board of Directors election today. When the polls closed on October 1, some 2356 members had cast their ballots and participated in the election. This year's election was the first time SLA worked with the candidates to record speeches and interview questions for posting to YouTube, as well as hosting a call-in forum for the president-elect candidates before the election began. The results have been finalized and the winners are as follows:

2009 SLA President- Elect:
Anne Caputo, Dow Jones & Company, Washington, D.C.
Caputo is executive director of Dow Jones' Learning & Information Professional Programs, where she is responsible for the planning and development of learning initiatives for Dow Jones Content Technology Solutions group. Prior to joining Dow Jones in 1998, she served in various positions with The Dialog Corporation, most recently as director of Dialog's Quantum information professional program and the Classroom Instruction Program. Caputo is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maryland, College of Library and Information Services, as well as a member of the distance education faculty for the University of Tennessee, School of Information Sciences. She served SLA at the local level as a director and later president of the Washington, D.C. Chapter. She has also served at the international level on SLA's Board of Directors as the 2006-2007 Chapter Cabinet Chair and as Secretary to the Board. In 2004 Caputo was named a recipient of SLA's Rose L. Vormelker Award for mentoring students and practicing professionals, and she was named a Fellow of SLA at the 2008 Annual Conference and INFO-EXPO.

Caputo will serve a three-year term on the board, as president-elect in 2009, president in 2010 and past-president in 2011.

The open positions for the 2009 SLA Board of Directors included chapter and division cabinet chairs-elect as well as two director positions. The members elected to serve in these positions are as follows:

2009 Chapter Cabinet Chair-Elect (two-year term on board, 2009 as chair-elect and 2010 as chair):

  • Ruth Wolfish, IEEE, Piscataway, New Jersey

2009 Division Cabinet Chair-Elect (two-year term on board, 2009 as chair-elect and 2010 as chair):

  • Ann Sweeney, European Union--European Commission Delegation, Washington, D.C.

2009 Directors (three-year terms on board):

  • Daniel Lee, Navigator Ltd, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
  • Nettie Seaberry, National Minority Supplier Development Council, New York City

Each candidate on the slate clearly deserved to be nominated, and I am sure that we will continue to hear from these SLA stars as they continue to serve the association with distinction in various other leadership roles," said SLA CEO Janice Lachance. Caputo and the other newly-elected board members will begin their terms on the SLA Board of Directors on January 1, 2009, and participate in their first board meeting during the association's Annual Leadership Summit later that month in Savannah, Georgia.
