Janice Lachance Selected to ASAE's 2011 Class of Fellows

WASHINGTON--Janice Lachance, chief executive officer of SLA (Special Libraries Association) has recently been named to ASAE's 2011 class of Fellows.

ASAE's Fellows program recognizes individual accomplishments and contributions to ASAE and the association community, and is a call to service for the profession. The Fellows recognition denotes individuals who have made a significant impact on the association community through exemplary volunteer service and leadership, extraordinary accomplishments, and/or other major contributions to ASAE and the profession of association management.

About Janice Lachance
Janice Lachance, SLA's chief executive officer since 2003, is a popular speaker and the champion, spokesperson and global ambassador for SLA and its members.

Since joining SLA, Janice has re-engineered the association's professional development program to meet the needs of information professionals. She has expanded SLA's public policy program, which has increased the association's influence, and has supported an open, robust and independent Internet. Janice has also initiated a multiyear, comprehensive research effort to create a shared, evidence-based vision of the future role of the information professional. The research is currently in its implementation stage.

Janice currently serves on the board of the International Federation of Library Associations, and was a member of the U.S. delegation to the World Summit on Information Society in 2005. She is a Fellow and board member of the National Academy of Public Administration.

Prior to joining SLA, Janice was nominated by President William Clinton and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate as director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in 1997. She is credited with changing the strategic direction of OPM--the federal government's human resources agency, with a 3,700-person workforce and a $27 billion budget serving--and transforming it into a flexible, innovative, entrepreneurial human resources management organization. Prior to becoming director, Janice held several senior executive positions at OPM."Since Janice joined SLA as its CEO seven years ago, I've seen her provide the association with great leadership at a time of change and transformation within the information industry," said 2011 SLA President Cindy Romaine. "Janice initiated authoritative and unprecedented research focused on aligning our members' skills with the needs of today's user and the opportunities of the knowledge economy. I was so pleased to hear that she had been given the honor of becoming an ASAE Fellow."

About ASAE Fellowship
"The ASAE Fellows program is an honorary recognition bestowed upon less than 1% of ASAE's membership," said Jeffrey N. Shields, CAE, executive director of the National Business Officers Association and chair of ASAE's Fellows Selection Committee. "It is also a call to continued leadership and service as an ASAE member. The 2011 class of Fellows represents an exemplary group of association leaders. It is an honor to welcome them to the Fellows community."

The Fellows selection process includes endorsement by a peer; an in-depth application describing the individual's innovation, leadership and commitment to the profession; an interview with a member of the selection committee; and, ultimately, selection from among a group of highly-qualified candidates.
