SLA Recognizes Information Professional for Diversity and Leadership

Alexandria, Virginia, 25 May 2011--Elizabeth "Eli" Edwards, a temporary research librarian at the Seattle-based law firm of Foster Pepper PLLC, is the recipient of the 2011 Diversity and Leadership Development Program (DLDP) Award, granted by the Special Libraries Association (SLA), and sponsored by EBSCO.

Eli was chosen by the DLDP Committee for her professional accomplishments within the information profession, her strong and early-career involvement within SLA, and the diversity she brings to SLA’s volunteer leadership.  She will be recognized at the SLA 2011 Annual Conference & INFO-EXPO, at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, 13 June, during the DLDP session, titled "Leveraging Diversity and Inclusion for Success." The session is co-sponsored by EBSCO and ProQuest & Dialog.

The DLDP Award was first granted in 1995 to recognize the potential for leadership in individuals from backgrounds that are typically under-represented or unique within SLA, its governance, and the information profession.  Besides exhibiting an interest in and the potential for leadership in SLA, recipients must have been a member of SLA for at least one year, and have between three and ten years of professional library and information experience.

DLDP Award recipients receive a $1,000 stipend to offset the cost of traveling to the conference, plus complimentary conference registration.

About the 2011 Recipient
Eli Edwards joined SLA while earning her MLIS degree from San Jose State University in 2001. Since then, she has made significant strides in her field. She has worked in a variety of roles such as Web content consultant for Justia in Seattle, where she compiled and summarized information for Websites that provide free legal information, helping to increase awareness of no-cost legal resources for the general public. She has also been published in numerous industry publications, such as Internet Technology and Libraries, and has presented at the California Library Association Annual Conference, the University of San Francisco, and other professional conferences.

Within SLA, Eli was swift to move into leadership roles, such as program director for the San Andreas Chapter (2005-2006) and member of the conference planning council for the 2011 Annual Conference. She will also be the 2012 chair of SLA’s News Division starting in January.

"SLA has been an invaluable resource for me since I joined as a new MLIS student," she said of her SLA experience. "But SLA is not just a resource; it’s a community of passionate, dedicated professionals who have served their clients and peers ably and are resolved to meet the challenges of 21st century librarianship and information management.  I am exceptionally pleased and honored to be awarded by SLA and I look forward to contributing as a leader, to SLA and the profession at large."
