Deb Hunt Voted President-Elect of SLA
Leads Slate of Five Members Joining SLA Board of Directors in 2012

Alexandria, Virginia, 3 October 2011--The 2011 election for the Special Libraries Association's (SLA) Board of Directors drew to a close on Wednesday, 28 September, with 2,393 SLA members casting their votes. The voting resulted in five new members being selected to the association's governing body:

  • President-Elect: Deb Hunt
  • Chapter Cabinet Chair-Elect: Debbie Schachter
  • Division Cabinet Chair-Elect: Ann Koopman
  • Directors: Marilyn Bromley and Hal Kirkwood

"We had a spectacularly qualified group of dedicated members personalize their commitment to our profession by standing for election to the SLA Board of Directors," said SLA's incoming 2012 President Brent Mai. "I thank them all for their leadership, and offer my congratulations to those who were elected!"

The five new board members will begin their terms on 1 January 2012 and will participate in their first board meeting at SLA's annual Leadership Summit, scheduled for 19-22 January in Atlanta, Georgia.

SLA thanks all of the board candidates for their hard work campaigning and for participating in the volunteer leadership process. SLA also thanks those members who made their voices heard in the election.

More About the Newly Elected Board Members

Deb Hunt
Since joining SLA in 1986, Deb has served as a director on the SLA Board of Directors (2008-2010), chaired the creation and recent update of SLA's online professional development initiative, 23 Things, and served on the Information Ethics Advisory Council (2008-2010). She is currently chair of the Leadership and Management Division (LMD) Nominating Committee and serves on the Professional Development Advisory Council (2008-present).

Deb received an SLA Presidential Citation in 2008 for 23 Things and was awarded the Karen J. Switt Leadership Award from the Leadership and Management Division in 2009.

Deb is an independent information professional and Principal of Information Edge, which specializes in value-added research, knowledge services, enterprise content management, and library creation and automation. She is an active member in the Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP) and served on the Board of Directors from 2001-2003. For 14 years, Deb was a senior information specialist at the Exploratorium, an interactive museum in San Francisco. Her responsibilities included developing and maintaining the Exploratorium Website and instituting collaboration in formal and informal education communities worldwide. She co-chaired a major internal information infrastructure initiative, implementing knowledge management services to improve staff access to internal and external sources of information.

Deb has worked and consulted in a number of different types of libraries, including academic, special and medical. She earned her MLS degree from UC Berkeley and recently completed a certificate program in enterprise content management.

Debbie Schachter
Debbie Schachter is the director of learning resources at Douglas College in New Westminster, British Columbia. She has been active in SLA through the Western Canada Chapter, serving as chapter president (2009), alignment ambassador (2009-2010), treasurer, communications director, and several other positions. She also writes a column in SLA's Information Outlook magazine on business and management issues.

Debbie lectures regularly on a variety of topics at the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia and co-teaches Supervision for Library Technicians at Langara College in Vancouver. She received a master's degree in library science in 1990 from the University of British Columbia and a master's of business administration from Simon Fraser University in 2002.

Ann Koopman
Ann has been an active member of SLA, serving most recently on the Science-Technology Division's Strategic Planning Committee and the Nominating Committee. She started the popular "Science of..." series, the Sci-Tech Division's contributed papers program, and a multi-year arc of programs on the themes of open access, alternative publishing models and institutional repositories. She has presented papers and assisted with continuing education courses at SLA annual conferences and has authored several practical articles about the use of various tools in the library environment.

Ann earned her library degree at the University of Chicago and has completed additional coursework in chemistry, accounting, math, and computer science at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) and Rutgers University. Since 1995, she has filled several positions at Thomas Jefferson University, a school devoted to the health sciences, where she is currently manager of her library's Web service, JEFFLINE.

Marilyn Bromley
Marilyn is library director at the Bureau of National Affairs (BNA) and has been active in SLA since joining the association in 1978. She was president of SLA's Washington, D.C. Chapter in 1992-1993 and twice served as chapter treasurer (1984-1987 and 1996-1999). She was also program planner for the Legal Division for the SLA 2007 Annual Conference in Denver.

At the association level, Marilyn has been a member of the Bylaws Committee (and its chair in 2002-2003), the Finance Committee, the Tellers Committee (chair in 1996-1998), and the Committee on Association Governance. She is currently a member of the Washington, D.C. Chapter, Social Science Division, Legal Division, Competitive Intelligence Division, and Information Technology Division.

Marilyn's professional interests include copyright issues, competitive intelligence, and the use of return-on-investment tools to demonstrate the value of the corporate library. In 2002, she and the BNA library staff successfully proved a positive ROI of their work. Online searching has always been one of Marilyn's major areas of expertise and her passion, and in June 2002 she was named a Dialog InfoStar.

Marilyn received her library degree from the Catholic University of America. She gives back to her local community by serving as a citizen member of the board of the Alexandria Law Library, a public law library in the city of Alexandria, Virginia.

Hal Kirkwood
Hal Kirkwood is the Associate Head of the Roland G. Parrish Library of Management & Economics at Purdue University. Hal has 16 years of experience in academic libraries and is particularly interested in business information literacy, problem-based learning, database and Web usability, concept mapping, and innovative library space design. He has been published in the Journal of Business & Finance Librarianship, Library Journal, College & Undergraduate Libraries, Online, SLA's Business & Finance Division Bulletin, and various other publications. In addition, he has presented at SLA annual conferences, Computers in Libraries, Internet Librarian, Online World, Decision Sciences Institute, and several other national and regional conferences.

Within SLA, Hal is a member of the Business & Finance Division, Competitive Intelligence Division, and the Indiana Chapter. He has served as the Webmaster for the Indiana Chapter and the Business & Finance Division, chair of the College & University Business Librarians Roundtable (now a Section of the Business & Finance Division), awards chair of the Business & Finance Division, and chair of the Business & Finance Division in 2007. Hal earned his library degree from the University of South Carolina.
