REWARDING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE:
SLA ANNOUNCES 2003 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

Alexandria, VA, USA, June 14, 2004 — Five outstanding individuals have been selected as recipients of the Special Libraries Association’s (SLA) 2004 Scholarships. The winners were selected by the SLA Scholarship Committee, and will be officially honored at the SLA 2004 Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee USA, June 5-10, 2004.

The SLA Scholarship is granted only for graduate study in librarianship leading to a master’s degree at a recognized school of library or information science. Applicants must possess, or be preparing to receive, a bachelor’s degree with an interest in special librarianship. This year’s winners are: Roberta Craig, Dawn R. Pottinger and Margaret A. Smith.

Roberta Craig is the director of OSF St. Anthony Medical Center library; she also worked in public libraries before taking on her current position. She earned a BA in sociology from Crown College, in St. Bonafacius in Minnesota, and also graduated Summa Cum Laude from Rock Valley College with a BA in sociology. Craig also holds an associate degree in computer science from the same institution. She is currently enrolled in the LEEP Distance MLS program at the Graduate School of Library Science, University of Illinois.

When she is not working and studying, Craig is deeply involved in community service, working as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and the Red Cross. She is also involved in Literacy Initiatives, where she participates in reading and story telling for children. Craig is interested in human information-seeking behavior and information literacy in relation to the use of electronic sources. Additionally, she is interested in working in special collections.

Dawn R. Pottinger is dual Master’s Degree candidate in Library Science and Business Administration at Kent State University. She received her undergraduate degree in geography from The Ohio State University. Pottinger worked in the acquisitions department of the law library at Ohio State as a student assistant. She is interested in bringing all her education and skills together for possible opportunities in business or map libraries upon graduation. Pottinger is the Vice President of the SLA student group at Kent State, and was instrumental in coordinating a bus trip for the student group to tour special libraries in the Washington DC area.

Margaret A. Smith is the Research Director at D.F. King & Company, New York, NY. Smith earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology from Columbia University and is now enrolled in the School of Information and Library Science at Pratt Institute, New York. She is an active member of the New York Chapter of SLA and has been in charge of the Downtown Luncheon Group for the Chapter. Smith responded to an item on the SLA discussion list in the Spring of 2002 and, as a result, spent 4 weeks in China with her 12-year-old son, teaching conversational English to grammar school age children in South Central China.

The SLA Affirmative Action Scholarship is granted to a member of a minority group, defined by the U.S. Government as Black, Hispanic, Asian, or Pacific Islander, and American Indian or Alaskan Native, for graduate study in librarianship leading to a master’s degree at a recognized school of library or information science.

This year’s recipient is Florante P. Ibanez. She is a joint Master’s Degree candidate in Information Studies (MLIS) and Asian American Studies (MA) at the University of California, Los Angeles. He previously earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Comparative Cultures from the University of California, Irvine. Mr. Ibanez is very active in various non-profit organizations related to Filipino-American culture. He is also active in the SLA Student Group at UCLA. He hopes “to master the tools and gain the experience to help build both a virtual and physical Filipino American Museum and Research Library.” Mr. Ibanez intends to continue working at the Loyola Law School Library after completing his degree at UCLA.

Mary Adeline Connor Scholarship Winner is granted to a post-MLS certificate or degree program candidate in any subject area, technological skill, or managerial expertise relevant to the applicant's career needs and goals in special librarianship. This year’s recipient is Susan E. Randolph.

Susan E. Randolph is a Master’s degree candidate in public administration with a concentration in nonprofit management at the School of Public Policy and Administration, George Washington University. Randolph is an intern at the Smithsonian Institution Libraries Development Office. Her work at the Smithsonian is in fundraising, including writing funding proposals and research on potential donors. She received her MLS from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Michigan. Randolph‘s library career has included positions at the U.S. Department of the Interior, Department of Commerce, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Council on Library and Information Resources, and work in a theology library and school library. Her 2001 paper “The Search Conference: A Strategic Planning Tool for a Turbulent World,” won the 2001 Yankee Book Peddler Student Writing and Development Award from the Library Administration and Management Association. The article was published in the Fall 2001 issue of Library Administration and Management.
