SLA SUPPORTS GOOGLE?S REBUFF OF FEDERAL
SUBPOENA IN PERSONAL PRIVACY CASE

Alexandria, Virginia USA, 20 January 2006 ? The Special Libraries Association (SLA) announced today it is joining other organizations in supporting Google?s rejection of a U.S. Department of Justice subpoena of clients? personal search records.

SLA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Janice R. Lachance said, ?While the global community of information professionals supports the prosecution of despicable acts such as child pornography, we support Google in its fight against the subpoena from the Justice Department in its effort to review the search habits of individual Google users. Librarians and information professionals believe the freedom of users, clients, and patrons to conduct searches without fear of government reprisal is an inherent protection that must be vigorously defended by us all.?

SLA believes the federal subpoena of Google amounts to a unconstitutional demand for massive personal information and, in effect, is warrantless domestic wiretapping and a dangerous erosion of individuals? civil liberties.
