Future of Librarians in the Workforce Survey for Special Librarians Now Out
SLA Member Participation Imperative for Quality Results

As covered in the July issues of SLA Connections and Information Outlook, a random sample of North American SLA members have been asked to participate in a survey as part of the "Future of Librarians in the Workforce" study being funded by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services. The surveys are now arriving in people's mailboxes and SLA would like to remind and encourage members to complete and return them as soon as possible.

The survey, tailored for special libraries and librarians, will provide data for all information managers regardless of whether they call themselves special librarians, information professionals or knowledge managers. The survey will cover over 6000 special libraries, 6000 school libraries and all academic and public libraries.

According to Sarah Aerni, a University of North Carolina research assistant working on the survey, "Completing the survey will require respondents to be understanding and be flexible when answering the survey questions.  For example, the word librarian has been used throughout, so if that is not what you call yourself, please be flexible in regards to your official title," she said. "Similarly the survey refers to 'libraries'.  We are looking for participants to consider that term as inclusive of any unit from which the dissemination of information is centered.   This may or may not be a physical entity such a library or information center."

Note to Participating Managers or Directors:

Some participants have been asked to have staff fill out a short staff survey.  After you have completed your portion of the survey please be sure to forward the link to the staff survey questionnaire to the employees in your department.  The responses to this portion of the survey are extremely important and will provide valuable insight and information regarding the state of the profession today.

More information on the progress of the study can be found on the Workforce Study's website at http://libraryworkforce.org/,

If you did not receive a survey and would like to participate please contact, Sarah Aerni at: aerni@email.unc.edu
